I came from being a medeocre bass player. It was the best thing I could have ever done before taking up the steel. Really taught me timing and discipline.

My current rig of choice is 1993 Emmons LeGrande w/ 108 pups (Jack Strayhorn built for me), Goodrich OMNI Volume Pedal, George L's cables, Goodrich Baby Bloomer and Peavey Nashville 112. I played bass as a kid and moved on to classical cello before I got into steel. I have owned guitars but can't really play them.
I find students that play piano have a much easier time understanding the steel than guitar players do. Also students with a background in the brass instruments tend to have a more developed ear than guitar or piano players.
