My friend has bought an older 6 string lap steel and needs to know the tunings to use for older classic country. He is retired and has a desire to learn this instrument. I have never owned a lap steel or attempted to play one, so i'll need your help. Can you also give me the string guages ? I appreciate any help , thanks-Skip

Scotty's C6 book and cd found under lap steel instruction and a set of Jagwire C6 strings for six-string lap steel will put your friend on the right path. Both can be bought from b0b right here on the forum, just click on "Instruction" and "Strings" at the top of the page.

MY 2c.
For that early Hank Sr. sound, tune the guitar to E6, and play and sing lots of Hank Sr songs in C. I dunno, but it works.

Ron, thanks for your info too. That sounds like it'll fit my friend well. He likes the Little Roy sound and also Hank Sr with Don Helms.
