MAN, that's a shocker! I hadn't heard anything about him being sick. John, thanks for posting, I always liked Dan's stuff. Good guitar player, writer, singer...

Dan Fogelberg is the son of Larry and Margaret Fogelberg from Peoria, Illinois.
I delivered thier newspaper (Peoria Journal Star) for about 5 years. They were my best customers.
One of the things that I enjoyed most was being able to visit with Dan on a few occasions while he was home. He lived in Colorado and also had a home in Maine. While driving between the two residences, he would stop and visit his mom. He loved to drive across country in the Summer in his Jeep.
We would play our guitars in the living room of the home in which he grew up on Califorina Street in Peoria, IL. His brother, Pete is a fantastic artist (painter).
Dan and I also went to the same high school, Woodruff High School. He graduated in 1969.
Dan was a huge fan of the steel guitar and felt it enhanced his songs. I think that Al Perkins was a good friend of his and did most of his studio work.
His father Larry, was known as the "Leader of the Band". Dan wrote that song about his father. Larry, was the band director at Woodruff High School for many, many years..later retiring as the Band Director at Pekin High School (12 miles from Peoria).
Another song story is about "Same Old Auld Lang Syne". That is a true story and really happened.
Those memories of the Fogelberg family will always be with me..
Rest in Peace Dan.

| Sorry to hear that. I will never forget having a press pass to watch CCR from onstage at one of the Atlanta Pop Festivals in the '60s. Dan was outfront, and the rest of the band watched him intensely as they played their songs note-for-note as they were on the recordings - no jamming for those guys. One of the tightest groups I ever saw. He was too pop for some. But I loved all his stuff. He had a great blues-groove rock style. We'll miss you, Dan. |

My wife (and most of her girl friends) were huge Dan Fogelberg fans in the 70's and she 'drug' me to every concert he played that was anywhere close to the Dallas/Fort Worth area.
After the first one, I realized that this was a very talented guy, and it didn't take much persuasion to get me to go see him again. I'm pretty sure forumite Earnest Bovine (Doug Livingston) played in one iteration of Dan's band, "Fools Gold" I think? and his backup bands were always top notch players. On top of being a great musician, every thing I've read and encountered indicates that he was a great guy. Dan will be missed.
On the soapbox: I was diagnosed with prostate cancer on Oct 16 of this year, and fortunately it was early stage. I had surgery on Nov. 19 and the prognosis for a complete cure is good. I've been getting annual physicals since I turned 50 and thanks to the conscientious care of my primary care physician, we found this sooner rather than later. If you guys aren't being checked for prostate cancer 'indicators' at least once a year, you should be. I know, the er..uh, examinations can be a bit 'personal' but look at the alternative...
Apparently, Dan was diagnosed in 2004 with advanced prostate cancer, and at that point you have few treatment options. About all you can do is try to manage the disease.. Just do it.
