I have made a promise to myself to not buy my first steel until March of next year. The Dallas show is then and I want to see and hear as many as I can in one location before I leap but friends this wait is tough.
I am PURPOSELY saving $400.00 a month starting in November so in March I can get a decent first guitar and it be paid for. I knew if I didn't space out my savings I would leap before I could SEE and HEAR the guitar that's right for ME. The wait is rough though.
And the more I hear about everyones beautiful and great sounding steels the more I want one now. I think I have
a bad case of "steel fever" but I'm thinking in March
I will calm down. I've just got to take a few deep breathes now and then and know it won't be long. I want the suffering to be over (and the envy) I feel pathetic.
Heck of a plan, Dan. There are so many excellent choices these days. The best way is to touch, feel and hear for yourself. Not to sound like a fortune cookie, but your patience will be rewarded.
If you pick a real popular brand you may have some addititional time to save. They won't all show up there with a large stock to deliver on the spot.
Be thinking in terms of tunings and copedants (pedal and lever setup) too.
Afterwards, once you have your steel (or two or three) you get to enjoy the wave of endorphins and dopamine that engulfs the brain every time you remember that "I finally have my steel... yeah!".

Ron I'm trying to do it right and take the advice of some wise steelers and see it and play it first since it is my first and I'll be initially learning on this one.
I think I'll put that guitar hero 2 money toward a steel guitar instead.
Hey I can always come back to the Forum and buy a great guitar lightly used from one of the fine people here since I will know WHICH guitar I'm wanting then. Maybe
the timing will be right.
I just have this feeling that after I get ONE steel, ONE amp and everything else I need I'm going to want to begin trying out other steels. I may become a fanatic or get that steel aquisition syndrome I hear about. I'm worried.
What you looking for . A good D-10 or SD-10,New or Used( LIke NEW). Brother Billy can help with a new guitar. I might be able to help you with a near new used or rebuilt guitar.

Hi Dan, you said "I may become a fanatic" ...WRONG!! You "Will" be one and sooner than you think. You may already be one being on this fab site. There's many to choose from for your first guitar, but from you enthuasiam, I think spend your money on a Pro model. If you started on a "Starter" guitar, you'll loose out in the long run, because in as much as the starter guitars these days have 3 and 4, they won't look half as good as a good Pro model, and that's what I envisage seeing you sitting behind as you start out on your new found love
Daniel, everything you mentioned is a possibility. I
just want to get around a lot of guitars and hear each one first. Well, a D-10 no. S-10 or SD-10 yes. I'll have a much better idea in March and money in hand too.
Having the contacts like this for a guitar really helps. You may end up having, or can get, just what I'm after but it won't be for a few months yet. I'm taking this time to learn all I can and TRYING to be patient. A BIG thanks!
No kidding RC. I'm starting to dream steel guitar. I may need help. I look at all these wonderful steel guitars on here and hear the comments of all these fine forum members and how well they love their
steels, well, I'm going to fit right in in a few months. I already have a "pedal steel room" staked out.

Micky I'm guessing your right. A mixture of great passion and fanatic I think. Well, I may have given the dear uncle too much money interest free this past year because I gave him too little the year before. More likely over than under so he will be giving me some back most likely. I'm still adjusting. I've had that in the back of my mind. Giving 10 percent to my church or
charity that still leaves 90 percent of some amount. I
may be at a pro model yet.

That pedal steel guitar is an amazing and wonderfully sounding instrument. I love it and I am going to love spending time learning this magical instrument. Playing all my favorite songs and killer licks I've long pined to be the one playing for myself and for others enjoyment. I've been given so much joy from EVERYONE I have ever heard play the pedal steel. I love anyones playing on the steel at any level. I want to be playing very well in a couple of years maybe and will do what it takes to get there. This Forum is a huge help!
Boy, I well remember when I would stay up all night worrying about which guitar to buy. That was a long time ago before I became a dealer. It's an addiction, nothing like it. Always searching for THAT guitar, THAT tone. Lots of folks here to help, have fun my friend and welcome to our little STEEL world!
Thanks Billy. Yes, looking at all the beautiful guitars and hearing some of them is beyond fascinating. So MANY are gorgeous and built like tanks it seems. The high quality jumps out at you! Nothing spared in the areas of quality it seems with all these newer guitars. I look at them from ALL the manufacturers and just say, "WOW". I'm going to be getting a really great guitar in 2008.

It's very difficult to save up for anything. I am going to save up a down payment and do the layaway thing. Easier to scrape up payments than save. At least for me.
Ok if the Guitar Hero can let me play along to anything by Wynn, Ray, Webb, Hank Locklin, Porter, The Wilburn Brothers or someone close to that I'll buy two. Loud rock music isn't for me. I love that traditional country with the Pedal Steel. Just can't listen to anything else. I'm a hopeless case.
My suggestion is before spending any money on a pedal steel to stay up until about 2:30 in the morning for about 6 or 7 nights in a row just to see if you can get used to the time warp when you can't stop until you figure this one thing out!!! Then I would probably buy a Jackson Blackjack. Good luck!

Dan What you should be doing right now is getting all the Literiture you can on steel guitars and read up on it if you are just starting off with a Steel Guitar.If you don't already know the cords and how to use the pedals and Knee levers you should read up on all this important things about how the Steel works.I have been 10 years and I still have a problem with the timming .I know the cord changes but for me to tell you them I can't do that I just play and know where I'm going but don't ask me the cords that I'm playing aS I CAN ONLY TELL YOU WHAT CORD I'M IN.

Dan- My only advise would be to try and purchase a pro model, as previous mentioned, it will pay in the long run.
You are also lucky to be able to look and try out different models. We live where music stores probably have never even sold a steel guitar unless it was a trade for something else.
Terry the same goes here. There are no music stores in Rhode Island that handle Steel Guitars not only that they do no even carry Strings for Steel Guitar.If so they are very Rare.
