I think Jimi has came back as Robert... I heard Jimi always wanted to tackle the steel. I started browsing the other videos and saw some great picking and singing as well. I think he may be on the road to the SGHOF whether he wants it or not. My hats off to some stellar pickin here. He really owns it when he plays and that's really what counts. I never enjoyed his playing until now... I even found some other great videos on the UTube that showed me he does pick great riffs and melodies. But I'm sure I'm to old to attend one of his concerts (it would absolutely exhaust me).

I've watched a number of his videos and it appears to me that he just plays slide guitar on the pedal steel. I really saw a little or any use of the pedals in his playing. Can someone set me straight on this?

Yes, on a lot of his hottest stuff, he rarely or never hits a pedal or lever. He plays it as a 13 string E7 lap steel. Who cares? How many other people can play a lap steel like that? He can play it standing up, like Little Richard played piano. And, no, you can't get all he gets on a 6-string slide guitar. And he can make some very sweet music using pedals and knees when the occassion calls for it.

Hendrix would use a microphone stand as a slide, moving his guitar against it. Imagine what he would have done with a 13-string lap or pedal steel.

The guy is outstanding, I wasn't putting him down at all. It was just an observance and a question. I would like to see him use the pedals and levers, it would be interesting.

One may or not like the music, but any which way, the performance is convincing... very convincing.

Would seem fun to see him and Joe Wright lock horns at a convention... talk about taking the house down...

At about 3:33 he uses the A pedal (scooping a 7th to a root with no bar movement).

A while back I saw a clip of Robert playing a traditional country styled gospel tune. He was playing in the style most on this SGF are accustommed to hearing.

He nailed it ...

I first heard RR on the Word disc he did years ago with John Medeski and the North Mississippi All Stars. While his playing really kickstarted my interest in the pedal steel, I haven't heard anything since that has impressed me that much. I should really go back and listen to that album again.

The only problem I really have with it is:

He's out of tune...
