John Hughey Tribute 11/27 @ 6 PM

Post by Lana Rosselli »

All

Please join us at SteelRadio.com in honoring "Papa" John Hughey...a man with great talent, charisma, character...a gentleman whose smile lit up a community. A man with distinction - personally and professionally. In his humble way he touched everyone he met either through encouragement or support. He was and continues to be a friend to us all.

There is no doubt in my mind that John is resting high on the mountain and watching over us all. To me, Mr. Hughey has always had wings. I take comfort in knowing he can now spread his wings wider and be with us all in our hearts.

I feel privileged to host this tribute, joined by Scotty, Michael, and many others to reflect on the life of a man who touched us in so many ways. I hope you will join us in saluting the life of a legend.

Please feel free to post your thoughts and/or memories of John Hughey to be shared with the world.

We will air live on Tuesday, November 27, 2007 at 6 PM. I know schedules are tight - especially this time of year and with that in mind, it is our intention to record the program and rebroadcast it at a later date/time for all to hear.

Our thoughts and prayers are with Jean, Cheryl, and Beanie.

It was July, 2002 and our home was the scene of a wonderful jam. It was about 4:30 in the afternoon when Robert and Kathy Smith, Buck and Mitzi Grantham, Rob Parker, Dave and Marcey Musgrave arrived. We were all waiting for John and Jean Hughey and Hal Rugg to roll in. Venda, and our friend, Lois Yoakum were busy in the kitchen getting supper ready. About 2 weeks before the jam Jean Hughey called and wanted to help bring some food and did she ever bring delicious pecan pies!! I looked out the patio door and there they were. We all went out to greet them and helped them in with their equipment. They set up and we all headed for the kitchen. There were over 20 present. We were eating in the living room, kitchen, office, just any place you could find a chair. Then the big moment came and the jam began. It was 95 degrees outside and only one room air conditioner was at work. At first it seemed cool enough but with all the hot, fast pickin' it warmed up. Now here's the way it looked. As you came in the door, there was Buck with his equipment. To his right, Kathy Smith, I was to her right. John Hughey was next to me and then Hal Rugg. Robert Smith was next and Dave Musgrave completed the circle. And that was the way all the tunes went 'to the right'. You can only imagine how I felt sitting there with some of the very best steel pickers in the land. The next day was our Bransoon Jam at the Baldknobbers theater and 3 of the pickers that were on that show there were practicing up on us. We picked for several hours and had refreshments and a great time of fellowship together. When it was over most of them went to their hotels in Branson. John and Jean were so friendly with everyone and seemed to have a great time. John played a lot of jazz and some of his signature songs like "Hello, Darling", but he didn't play "Look At Us". That was saved until the next day at Branson. You would think someone as important as John Hughey would have an important 'air' about him, but not John. Back in May of that year I invited John to come by the house and play in our jam before the Sunday Show at Branson and without hesitation he said he would be glad to. Rob Parker had already explained to John about the jams we have here at our house. I asked Rob if he thought Hal would like to come so we asked him and he accepted graciously just like John had. So folks I can prove to what I say because my son-in-law's dad took a video of that evening and I've listened over and over to that evening of music. Rob Parker's singing and all that wonderful music will be in my memory forever. John Hughey was one of my favorite players... his music was always smooth, perfect, and elegantly performed.
Without a doubt his gospel songs will continue to be played on our show, "The Hanleys Gospel Hour" on SteelRadio.com.

Jerry, thank you for that wonderful story. John and Hal will always be with us in our hearts and our memories. Two great people and two great players. You and Venda are "special" people to a lot of us also and we thank you for what all that you've done by being there for us. God bless you! Ray

John Hughey Tribute

Post by David Young »

Thank you Miss Lana & Michael

The tribute was wonderful and all who told stories sharing about John and Jean just reinforced what we know about them already. They are amazing human beings and that is why we love them so dearly. I know that John would be so humbled with all the outpouring of love for him and Jean. God resists the proud but gives grace to the humble. The Lord made John gracious, and we all loved that about him.
Period!

Thanks,
David

Michael and Lana did it again....they featured one of our nation's top steel guitar players. We reluctantly admit to ourselves that John is gone from us but he is still very much alive in our hearts and minds and our stereo sets. I've been playing his music quite a bit, both in the car and at home. My, the warmth and the feeling that he put in his music is unmatched with top quality. When we listen to players we think we know who's playing, but when you hear John, there's no doubt who's playing. Let's treasure the steel players that are still here with us and give them flowers while they can still smell them. I think all steel players need some encouragement especially after they've played on stage. I often hear from players, "my sound wasn't right, I just couldn't pick like I wanted to", but of course no one noticed they had a problem. It sounded just right to the listeners. Our prayers are with Jean and our hearts go out to her!
