ROADSIDE RAG C6TH Lap Steel 8 String

Post by Roy Thomson »

The set up for this Instrumental..
High to Low:E...C...A...G...E...C...A...G
It is done Solo in the Travis Style.
Includes an ending that I learned from
listening to Buddy Emmons working the tune with
Shot Jackson way back in the 60's.
Any interested in learning this style
contact me for information OR Bobbe Seymore. :D

Great olde song..................

Post by Ray Montee »

Some of those olde steel guitar instrumentals have a special 'sound' to them. Not talking TONE.......but rather an element in playing.

The way I really began to progress in my learning and playing, was by learning as many steel guitar instrumentals by as many artists, as possible. There was no tab available...

By listening for certain 'sounds' I was able to determine the tunings, strings being picked and combinations of strings. Later on TAB was indeed helpful but nothing as dynamic as 'hearing it' and then finding it. This to me, is what learning steel guitar was all about.

Another really fine performance. Do keep them coming.

Pretty cool sound there Roy. You and Bobbe Seymour do an awesome job with that style.

Ray, did you ever get the Jerry Byrd photos I sent you?

Here is an introduction to Thumbstyle using the
tuning as noted above in my initial post. The same one used in the Solo MP3 ...also above noted.
Don't worry about the notes...whether it's root/five
five/root etc. The idea is to get the coordination
thumb and fingers. Anyone wanting further instruction
feel free to contact me.

I'll wait to hear from you Craig and thanks for
your interest.
Others are getting on this Thumbpickin Bandwagon
and I am so happy to be able to offer assistance
in learning this style on a Standard 8 String
C6th Tuning.
A few of the people who have come to me are
Thumbpickers on Standard Guitar and want to
translate the technique to Steel Guitar,,
and they are giving me positive feedback.
At some point in the future this way of
playing is going to "kick in" and I can't wait
to hear it. :)

Thanks Roy, i received the tabs & mp3. Your right!, it does look a little complicated for a beginner. I'll
pick it out slowly(for sure) and see what happens. It
sounds great. - C.R.
