If it's less than 700 meg, you might be able to burn it as a Data CD |

I do it to DVD's all the time with Nero. Never used CD's but Nero says it will do it. |

Make a DVD. Video CD's will not play on some standalone DVD players. |

I understand I'm not answering the question, but I'm simply SHOCKED.
Are there still people on this planet who actually don't own a computer? That's nothing short of amazing. |

Calvin, there are so many options to choose from nowadays, I can only share with you what I’ve done. I’ve used Pinnicle software, which includes a piece of hardware that connects your camcorder to your computer; you’ll need to confirm the available connections on your camcorder. The audio/video data transfer rate is tremendous, you may want a separate hard drive to upload and render your vids. Pinnicle recommends you disable your Internet connection and turn off all virus and associate protection software. In fact, all applications should be disabled while you are working with video stuff. The transferred data can be slightly corrupt with popping noise and out of sync footage if any other application is running. Once you upload your stuff, the footage has to be rendered to your viewing audience and then a DVD is burned. The process really isn’t that difficulty depending on your ability to handle another learning curve. There are minimum computer requirements for video rendering, all of which can be answered when and if you call Pinnacle’s toll free number. Some camcorders come with software that will do what you want, but a good assumption is your gear wasn’t augmented with such, which is why you are asking?
Make sure your purchase the correct disks for making videos. You can’t burn a video on a disk formatted for mp3 and I believe a data CD won’t work either. The format I use is a DVD-R. |

Well, the reality is, you have some digital media you want to share with someone who apparently has no present capability view it. The available options would appear, to me at least, that either he needs to be willing to acquire and learn to use some means of reading digital media, or it won't work.
Which type of device he may or may not be willing to acquire and learn would determine the format you send the media to him. The ball's in his court, and you could provide guidance in terms of what's available, cost, and the potential learning curve. That's my take.
Age alone doesn't have to be a limiting factor in intellectual pursuits. |

Calvin;
Have you considered copying your camera video to a VHS video tape, using a VHS recorder, then mail it to him? Ask him if he has a VHS player. This would be simpler than creating a DVD, especially without knowing if he can play the format you would send to him. _________________ "Wiz" Feinberg, Moderator SGF Computers Forum

Gary Lee, it seems you are speaking closest to my problem so I will address this to you:
My problem is that the files I have downloaded from Youtube, get converted to a .avi file in my "Easy Video download" program.. This .avi file will not play on any TV DVD players that I know of.
1. What free download do I get to convert these files to a 'normal' format, and
2. What IS the format (or extension name)that will play on a DVD machine as well as a computer?
Of course, anybody who has the answer, please chime in.
Thanks

Bent;
You should read the following pages for information about the differences between commercial DVDs and home-burned DVDs and what the various recordable DVD formats are.
The question about what programs are available for free, to convert YouTube videos to avi's has already been discussed on this forum, in a recent posts; here and here.
Side note: It might be a good idea to ask your friend what brand and model his DVD player is, then look it up on the manufacturer's web site and find the specs for playback formats. From what I've been reading there is a lot of incompatibility between brands and models, although many commercial players seem to handle DVD -R better than DVD +R disks (that you record). Once you know what his machine can handle, use Google to locate a converter application. _________________ "Wiz" Feinberg, Moderator SGF Computers Forum

Wiz,
Thanks for your reply, although it seemed a tad stern I thought. I appreciate the link you sent relating to the story on how to convert although it did go over my head. This is why I asked Gary in the first place, as I know him to be able to explain things at the level of a near computer illiterate.
Where you wrote:

...was not what I asked for an explanation on, seeing how that is the exact format that my download program converts these files to and that neither of my 2 DVD players hooked up to the TV sets, will play.
On the contrary, I asked for an explanation on how to convert FROM avi TO a DVD player format.
You see, Wiz, I did read the previous postings you linked to, without understanding fully. That is why I asked Gary.
I hope I did not over-step in any way.
Kind regards,
Bent |

Bent;
I apologize for that. My bad. I was on my way out and only got half the story right. Sorry bout that. But, do find out what brand and model of player your recipient has and see what formats it will play. Then, use Google search to find a program that will convert a YouTube-converted (.avi) movie to that format and burn it to a compatible DVD disk. I still think you could create a VHS tape out of it. That might be a lot simpler. _________________ "Wiz" Feinberg, Moderator SGF Computers Forum
