In the early 90s someone told me that if I wanted a Sho-Bud sound that the Mullen was the way to go. Did that ever apply? Does it apply today?

Thank you;

Sherman

Thank you. Calvin, I totally agree. In the early 90s I bought a late 80s Mullen D-10 8x5 and I had to give it up later. Truely an ache in my heart.

If you want a Sho-Bud sound, probably getting a Sho-Bud is the way to go! Very Happy

They are available all the time, here on the Forum and from steel guitar shops. Being used, they are less expensive than a new Mullen. And this could be considered the "Golden Age" for Sho-Buds, because of the number of dedicated craftsmen now doing maintenance, renovation, and "upgrades" on them.

Whether a Mullen has a Sho-Bud sound would be an entirely subjective judgement. I have a '94 Mullen (lacquer with metal necks); I think it sounds fabulous. I also have several Sho-Buds; I think they sound great, too. To me, the Mullen and Sho-Bud sounds differ significantly, but that's just my ears. YMMV.

Who ever told you needs a new set of ears. They sound totally different. Its Mullen, not Mullins.

I have a Mullen that Del Mullen built for me in 94, I wanted it to sound like a Sho-Bud, so I ordered it in Lacquer with wooden necks, when I recieved the guitar it had soft aluminum fingers, "instead of the usual black annodized ones", these fingers give a more mellow tone than the much harder ones that are on almost all Mullen guitars. I did change the E9 pickup to a BL 710, This is by far the best guitar I have ever owned, stays in tune,never breaks a string,plays like a dream,still looks like new, & I wouldn't trade it for 2 of anything else! I've owned at least 50 guitars "mostly Sho-Buds" Go Mullen! au

Early in my steel playing career, I owned 2 different Sho-Bud's, and since then I have had 3 Mullen's. To me they are not comparable at all. If the Sho-Bud sound is what you are after, then that is the guitar you should get. You might want to give the Mullen a try though, and see if you don't just like it better, and get hooked, like I did!

In the last 40 years I have had Sho-Bud's, Emmons's, Zum's and a few more that were professional grade instruments. Earlier this year, I bought a Mullen Pre G2 with 9 floor and 7 knee levers. Without a doubt, it is the easiest playing, has the best tone (has the wide mount G 2 pickups) of any guitar that I have owned. No, It doesn't sound like a Sho-Bud or an Emmons or even a Zum. But it has that sound that I have been looking for for the last 40 years. It will most likely be my last Steel since I am 72 years old. I would choose it again over anything I have ever sat down behind. The Mullen Guitar is hard to beat. We all hear and see things differently, Thats why we have Mullen, Emmons, Sho-Bud's etc.
