got a guitar today and some one had changed out the pickups then put the original george L E-66's back in.I've had these in other guitars and they have been pretty bright but in this guitar they seem to be just the opposit(too Bassy )i'm wondering if the leads could have been hooked up backwards or something ? any ideas,on this any way for me to check? thanks

Backwards leads are normally not an issue. Most pickups you can use either lead for the "hot" side.

I had a used George L E-66 that I bought a couple of years ago and it too was bassy. Never having a George L's E-66 I just assumed that was the way they were. I sold it to another person and I never got any feedback from him.

If you're using a pot pedal, try reversing the wires at the pedal. Cool

i'm using a Hilton pedal so that's not it .that's why i thought it may be something to do with the wiring that was done when he reinstalled it .

Lee, I have not found E66 pickups to be at all bassy, in fact just the opposite. I suggest that you somehow hook up direct from the pickup leads to a cord into the amp and see how it sounds. If you could use an old cord, remove one jack and put 2 alligator clips on in its place and clip them onto where the pickup leads hood up and plug the other end into the amp. Without knowing what kind of guitar you have it is a guess but it is possible if it has a tone control in it the pickup might be wired into the back side of the tone control. You need to be sure its the pickup causing the problem before you do anything else.
