Fred -
These were originally sold in VHS format, and have been sold out at Marty Robbins Enterprises for a few years.
I did order them on DVD format from England. Only problem was that these were not formatted to play in our US DVD format. They do fine on my computer.
Might have a second set around here someplace. If I find them will let you know and will mail to you.
With so many Jerry Byrd fans out there I'm sure someone has probably transferred these to DVD format and perhaps someone will contact you regarding this.I love these numbers with that Jerry did with Marty. As others have pointed out, they did not go back and "polish them up" electronically.
Two great masters together!

Dave, wow, that would be great ! I just can't get those songs out of my mind since seeing them. Great music, no showoff licks, just what fits the song, REAL music.

I've been informed by Bill Ferguson who's just posted a 'Legal' video of Jerry Byrd in the "Steel on the Web" section, that these are copyright and I'm apparently in breach, even 'though they've been unavailable for many years. So, before I delete them from the server at you tube, a question :-

Was I right or wrong to make this UNAVAILABLE material AVAILABLE again, or not ?

Bearing in mind that even when the artist's permission is obtained, there is still copyright subsisting on the music itself, on most posted videos unless the content is an original composition.

While you may have been legally wrong I believe you were ethically right, in the sense that the artistic, educational and historical gain was bigger than the copyright breach pain (if that makes any sense...).

But, copyright protection is there for a reason, and it's up to the copyright owner and not us 'fans' to decide where to draw the line..

So does Bill Ferguson want the material to be lost forever ?

I can't imagine any fan of Jerry's or Marty's would want that. I also can't imagine Jerry or Marty objecting if they could speak for themselves.

LEAVE THEM POSTED, BASIL. YOU WOULD BE DOING AN ENORMOUS DISSERVICE TO THE MEMORIES OF TWO GREAT ARTISTS BY REMOVING THEM.

Leaving them posted over the objections of the copyright holder is risky at best. But I think you've done everybody a service by posting them, including Mr. Ferguson. He can include me on the list of interested buyers for the DVDs.

No Edward your reading it wrong, it wasn't the copyright holders who objected.
The copyright holders of the videos that I posted on YouTube have ceased production years ago and I've not heard from them.

After these were originally posted I learned that Marty Robbins' son, Ronnie Robbins, owns the copyright on these programs. He has the original program masters on 1" tape - an outdated format, but still transferable to other formats - including digital. He has licensed the material in the past but has not not made DVDs. Andy, in light of what you've said, should I delete them and wait until Ronnie makes them available to buy.? At the moment there are NO videos available of the Drifter series on the site..
Maybe the publicity here has created the demand ?

Keep them available until Ronnie Robins asks you to take them off. I would be glad to buy the DVDs if they were ever issued. Until then, your postings are all we've got.

Does it make sense to say that seeing these makes me wish I had them on DVD? And how.......2 sets please!

Had I not seen these on here I would not have bought them blind on a reissued DVD, the YouTube versions were the first time I saw and heard Jerry Byrd play and appreciate Marty Robbins singing, since when I have bought material by each of them.

The longer they remain on here the bigger the market for a re-issued DVD, I say keep them going and withdraw them if requested by the copyright holder.

Having access to material on YouTube is not the same as having prime quality recordings on disc, it is believed that YouTube is regularly used by "the industry" to trail their artists/material to warm the market. Am I wrong?

Baz, legally speaking, I believe posting the clips on the web is a violation of US copyright law. Practically speaking, I don't think Mr. Robbins is losing sleep over this so you could well leave them up on a server until asked to delete them. On the other hand, how would you feel if you found out a website was offering your CDs for free? I found out about all this when I created the gallery video for the Museum of Making Music's steel guitar show last year and we licensed a clip from Robbins. As Jiminy Cricket once said, let your conscience be your guide.

...but Basil doesn't live in the US. The chances that anyone is going to waste money on international attorneys for such a petty violation are remote.

But Baz, like the rest of us, lives on the international stage of fairness. The "You aren't likely to get caught" argument has been used to justify too many things.

This is the way I look at it. I would much rather buy the DVDs, and the YouTube recordings are more like an advert. Most of the time what's on YouTube is just an excerpt. They're not usually full time recordings. Movie companies themselves put out shorts to entice people to buy DVDs or to go to the movie theatre. YouTube is doing that for them, at no cost to them.

As valid as the copyright point are, if there are no plans to re-release the material I think it should be made available to the Steel Guitar community SOMEHOW.

The web site says "Drifter Series" CLEARANCE SALE, I would think a pretty good indication that there are no immediate plans to make it available.

As for my responsibility for the breach of copyright, from my early days in Ireland I built transmitters, multiplex encoders and designed high gain collinear antennae and broadcast suites for the "Pirate" stations, (as well as owning a few) so a black eye patch and a parrot on my shoulder would seem to be my other personna.
Having a mother who buys gold Rolls Royces and BMW's as presents for her husband would leave me in a position of being able to be "Bailed Out" if there ever was litigation, in fact I'd welcome it.
