Morning all,

I'm looking for any more session details that are available for Waylon Jennings 1970 album "Singer of Sad Songs" on RCA REcords.
All bar the title track, the album was recorded at RCA's Music Center Of The World studios in Hollywood with producer Lee Hazelwood.

"Singer of Sad Songs" (Alex Zanetis) - 2:58
"Sick and Tired" (Dave Bartholomew/Chris Kenner) - 1:55
"Time Between Bottles of Wine" (Jimmie Morris) - 2:18
"Must You Throw Dirt in My Face" (Bill Anderson) - 2:17
"No Regrets" (Tom Rush) - 3:11
"Ragged But Right" (George Jones) - 2:12
"Honky Tonk Woman" (Mick Jagger/Keith Richards) - 2:58
"She Comes Running" (Lee Hazlewood) - 2:11
"If I Were a Carpenter" (Tim Hardin) - 2:24
"Donna on My Mind" (Billy Barton) - 2:12
"Rock, Salt, and Nails" (Utah Philips) - 2:08

Title: Singer Of Sad Songs
RCA Records: LSP-4418, November 1970

Original Liner Notes and co-vocal on "The Singer Of Sad Songs" by Lee Hazelwood.

Track 1 recorded October 29th 1969, RCA Victor Studio, Nashville
Fred Carter, Dale Sellers - el.guitar
Chip Young - rh.guitar
Roy Huskey - bass
Kenneth Buttrey - drums
Hargus Pig Robbins - piano
Charlie McCoy - harmonica/organ/marimba
Vocal chorus: James Cason, Sandra Robinson, and Bergen White.

The rest of the album was recorded at RCA Studios, RCA's Music Center, Hollywood through December 17-19th 1969.
the Hollywood sound engineer is referred to as Mickey, Mic Litz perhaps, who worked with Lee at Reprise and L.H.I.

Donald Owens, Patric Shannahan - guitar
Sonny Curtis - guitar/fiddle - session bandleader
Randall 'Randy' Meisner - bass
Carl Walden - harmonica
Allen Kemps - drums
Don Randi - piano/harpsichord

Vocal Overdubs were added on May 8/1970, RCA Victor Studio, Nashville. Vocals: Dorothy DeLeonibus, and The Jordanaires: Hoyt Hawkins, Neal Matthews, Gordon Stocker, Raymond Walker.

I'm curious as to whether the 6-CD Waylon Jennings Bear Family Box set "The Journey: Six Strings Away" has more details from these dates.
The particular sessions are split over the end of CD 2 and the very start of CD-3.

Essentially I'm looking for a break down of each days work and whether there's outtakes or extra tracks at all. They don't have to be finished takes on the box set, just curious how many take there were.
Also, Carl Walden mentioned that he probably played guitar, while Boomer Castleman has also talked about playing guitar on the session with Kemps and Walden, he had recorded at the same studio a couple of years beofre with his band The Lewis & Clarke Expedition.

Any further session info would be greatly appreciated.

On a side note, I'm sorry to say that there's no steeler on this record, Ralph Mooney wouldn't join Waylon's band until November of 1970.
However, I'd been after this album for years, and bought it on ebay about a month ago. Let me tell anyone who hasn't got this one, it did not dissapoint. This would have to be my favourite album by Waylon, and I dearly love his 1972-74 albums as well as his 60s work.

Cheers

Jason

Petr Vitous, thankyou for your prompt reply, I tried to post last night, but my server was too slow.. or the forum's.. or both.. I dunno, but here I am now.

That's very helpful, also helps me work on the Stone Canyon Band timeline I have on the go.

Stu, yes you are correct, that would be the joy of a quick bit of copying and pasting without checking the end result properly, Allen Kemp was the guitarist and had to make the leap from rhythm to lead at the Troubador for the band's debut when Sneaky Pete failed to show.. Pete, for a time was pulling down a wage with Rick Nelson and the Burritos.
I mentioned this to Jimmi Seiter the Burritos road manager in '69, his take was that Sneaky was not as sneaky as his name implied, but simply keeping his options open as Gram was prome to drift from projects.

Speaking of Allen Kemp's work with Rick Nelson's band and FBB, here's another country rock connection to these Waylon recordings:

Patrick Shannahan and Allen Kemp were, for a short time, members of the New Riders of the Purple Sage. The early '80's, I believe.

And of course, most country rock fans are aware of Randy Meisner's membership in the first (pre-recorded) Poco band line-up, as well as the Eagles.

Keep on pickin'!
