One week till Merle's new album

Merle Haggard's new acoustic CD goes on sell next Tuesday, just in time for the IBMA World Of Bluegrass in Nashville. It's on the McCoury Music label(as in Del McCoury Band's record label).

Merle tunes with Bluegrass instrumentation.

Merle without steel seems weird to me.

I'm lookin' for this one - but I love bluegrass with or without electric steel guitar - and even with b@njo. And with Merle doing the honors, what's not to like?

As far as Merle not having electric steel guitar, it seems to me that quite a few of the hits didn't have electric steel, or if it was there, was pretty well buried in the mix. "Today I Started Loving You Again", "Mama Tried", "The Fightin' Side of Me", "Workin' Man Blues", and "Silver Wings", and "I'm a Lonesome Fugitive" come to mind. Lots of Tele bending and acoustic guitar on some of these, but if there's steel on there, it's way in the background. I'm sitting here listening to "The Best of the Best of Merle Haggard" LP, and the steel is just not discernible on about half of them.

Frankly, I always thought that was one of the interesting things about Merle - he varied it up. When the steel was featured, it was drippin' and great. Other times, it focused on Roy Nichols' fantastic Tele playing. I dunno. Jimmie Rodgers and Bill Monroe never had steel at all - never seemed to hurt their music any.

Hey, where's Charlie to tell us that this isn't country music. Laughing

Merle's voice sounded super....Seeing I have everything he ever did including the Talley recordings this one will be in my player for sure....I like the accoustic Idea..

I ordered it from Chapters and it finally came in. It was well worth the wait. It has a whole lot of soul; the kind that comes from live off the floor.
The more I listen to it, the more it grows on me, like "kickin' out the footlights" with Merle and George, as well as "The last of the breed."

Thanks to the internet and the steel guitar Forum, I can find all the good music I want, including a McCoy Tyner CD that I just picked up at Chapters.

This is seriously good! Marty Stuart sure looks like he's enjoying every second of it. I'll have to get this one pronto. Could be even better than his "Roots" album!

Once you hear Rob Ickes' contribution to this album, then you will know why he's there.

Rob has said this was the greatest thrill of his career to play on this project.

Apparently Merle thinks a lot of Rob as well - because on some sessions (after this project was already finished) that Merle was recording up at his place outside of Redding in Northern California, Rob, before joining up with his bandmates from Three Ring Circle for a show in Marin County, flew out from Nashville to work with the Hag in his home studio.

I know that there apparently had been a handful of "historical sightings" of a pedal steel player appearing on stage with both Bill Monroe and Earl Scruggs, but c'mon, it would be pretty weird to call an album The Bluegrass Sessions and use a pedal steel player! Shocked

Actually, your "bluegrass purist" types have written that this is a good CD, but not really true bluegrass, more like acoustic country with some touches of 'grass.

Whatever...I could care less - it's good stuff!

I'm probably ready for this. I went to a nice outdoor bluegrass concert this past summer. Smile

True enough that many of Merle's hits didn't have a lot of steel. However, if you've heard the Live at Billy Bob's Texax CD's (2) then you know that "mistake" has been remedied. Particularly on "Today I Started Loving You Again", "Silver Wings", "Ramblin' Fever". There's just more music and playing on those albums period. Don Markam's horns get a lot of time too.
