I just received a beautiful '71 Sho-Bud ProfessionalD-10 a few days ago. I think I may have a pickup or wiring problem. The E9 neck sounds completely different than the C6. Initially thought the pickup may be microphonic as it is 36 yrs old. I changed strings today but the C6 neck still had more sustain and resonance with the old strings on it. Its hard to describe but it seems kind of clunky sounding and flat. Any ideas? I have yet to check the wiring but have been through a lot of guitars and have not encountered this.
thanks in advance,

Billy, I've got an old Professional too most likely around the same year. Although the c6 neck sounds fat and grawls like a bear, the e9 has that mellow shobud sound. You mention wiring, I could check the wiring on mine, it looks orignal and take a picture or tell you how its hooked up.
Funny thing is that last Saturday night I took the ole Professional out to the club I was playing at and played it through a Shobud dual channel christmas tree amp for a set. The sound was like heaven. I'm not used to playing those old buds anymore. It played like trying to drive an old wagon. Still the sound was great. |

Dumb question but are both at the same height?
Mine's got a couple of little toggle switches located on the E9 neck but one is for the C6 and the other for the E9. I have no idea if they're original or not. It sounds as if they switch from double to single coil; anyway they brighten up the sound a bit. But regardless of the position of the toggle switches, the C6 is much fatter sounding than the E9 and the E9's got a lot more treble. To me, it's 4 different sounds all of which are wonderful. (I recently had problems getting 8ve harmonics to sing above the 14 fret but solved the problem by playing the notes straight at the 26th - maybe that's cheating.)
BTW how did you date it? Somewhere I read that they were all made circa 1970-73 or 74 but haven't got any more precise than that. |

Thanks, to those guys who responded. I checked the wiring tonight and found one of the pickup wires was bare and under a piece of metal on the guitar. Moved it out of the way and this guitar is singing.
As far as the age of this guitar, lthe original warranty papers came with it.
thanks,

This is the proper wiring of your Professional with Coil tap switches.
The bare wire your speaking of is how the pickup is grounded to the strings.
Good luck.

Ricky, thanks so much for the diagram, these pickups are sho-bud dual coil, not the coil tap. moving the wire has solved the problemo. thanks,
