I put up a little tribute to Phil with a standard bio, some photos, and a few songs at: www.myspace.com/philbaughguitar

I'm just a fan, but I know a lot of forum members knew Phil personally, and spent time with him onstage and off.
I'd like to invite you to contribute. A few more biographical details would help, and any personal stories, memories, or comments in general are more than welcome.

thanks!

Phil was was a dear friend. He played such great guitar and was one of my heros. He left some great recordings to remind all of us just how great he really was. The recordings with The "BIG E" as part of the super pickers band are awesome. His old recording of country guitar is just wonderful. I sure miss him, his great playing , his humor and just being a nice guy. Miss ya pal, Bobby

What a great picker and showman he was,I remember him from all those great ISGC sets he did with the big E and Thumbs, I wonder if there are any recordings other than the Country guitar available? And did anyone continue useing his pedal guitar device, and if not I wonder why, It was such a unique sound, his version of shadow of your smile will give you goose bumps! I would like to see Scotty release some of those great B E and Phil sets from the 80's Those were some of the best !

Can anyone tell me Phil's birthday?
What year was 'Country Guitar II' released?
when was "Rapid Ragg" recorded?

There's a great Emmons/Baugh set from Jeff Newman's out there. I'd love to see that turn up on YouTube!

I need some more pics! Any of Phil and Thumbs together? How bout Phil and Reece?

I really miss him. I played 7 nights a weeek with him at the Hall Of Fame lounge for 2 years '88'89. Tommy White, David Smith, Ray Cobb, Rob Hajacos,Ernie Rowell too. He was really a special
guitar legend. He could play some beautiful fills as well as solos. Steve and Becky Hinson also played with us and had many laughs. He had a big sound. A great solo of his is on The Superpickers album at Austin City Limits, on "Rollin'In My Sweet Baby's Arms". He loved to play THE SHADOW OF YOUR SMILE and I ALWAYS GET LUCKY WITH YOU like he did with Jones.
Thanks for reminding us of Phil.

Scott, nice work.

It might be worth mentioning Sundazed Records on the main page as they maintain a presence on myspace as well, if you're not already linked to them.

I have a couple of Phil pics tucked away here somewhere, will get back to you.

cheers

J.

Does anyone know of some recordings where he played that pedal guitar? It would be very interesting to hear.

Did Phil and Maurice Anderson make a whole record together? Rapid Ragg is the only track i've been able to find and I'd love to hear more of that stuff.

Phil's B-day is Dec. 13, 1936

Jeff Newman had Phil Baugh playing at one of the Monday night shows that he had when Jefferan College was off of Old Hickory Blvd. in Nashville. I may be wrong, but it seems like either Johnny Cox or Stu Basore was playing steel that evening. That was sometime around 1986 or so. I remember being amazed by his guitar and his playing. Didn't Phil have a son that was also a really fine guitarist? alan

Here is a pic of Fred Maddox's band in the early 60s, with Phil kneeling on the right in the front row. Fred is wearing the hat. I think that is Vern Stovall and Bobby George (composers of "Long Black Limousine") to Fred's left.

Who are the other two guys?

Vance Terry told me that he and Phil grew up together in or around Yuba City CA and knew each other as teenagers.

Country Guitar II was released circa 1974, give or take a year.

I stayed in a Holiday Inn in Oklahoma City in June 1974. Came down to the lobby to pay my bill the next day to discover that Phil had played in the lounge the night before!! Never got to see him, to my never ending frustration.

thanks for the info. that's a hell of a story.

any recordings of Phil with the Maddox band???

just got a copy of 'California Guitar' today, found on eBay in near-mint shape for 9.99!!! listening to it for the first time right now. great layered guitar work on a bunch of covers from the era (late 6os)... will post some clips soon. what a player.

I remember Phil having pedals put on his guitar. I have a live recording of him playing "Georgia" at the ISGC several few years ago. His playing with Buddy Emmons and the Superpickers was some moments in time I sure cherish. He was just a fabulous guitar picker. I bet him and Thumbs Carlile are having a blast picking together in the afterlife.

Phil did a short stint with Ole Rasmussen's band, but not the original Nebraska Cornhuskers that recorded for Capitol, more like '56.

He also played with Chuck Mills band in the late 50s, after Chuck had split from Gene Davis, he may have gone to Las Vegas with Chuck for a time.

There is indeed the Fred Maddox stint, he also played in a series of combos with Bobby George, Curtis Leach, etc. and backed up Wynn Stewart on his return from Las Vegas post '64 into '65.
Phil did not follow Curtis Leach and other west coasters on the Longhorn label to Dallas in '65, the stroy is that he committed to it, but bailed at the last minute. Dewey Groom ended up having to drop Phil as he'd built his plans around Phil moving there, and sadly Curtis was killed not long after.

Phil had the Phil Baugh Trio with a succession of singing bassists, Eddie Drake was probably the last one, before Phil split in December of '69 to work with Ray Price (Forumite Dale Bennett also left the west coast to work with Ray and Phil at the same time) .. other Baugh Trio bassists in the 60s were were Tony (Toney) Goodman and Eddie Downs.

My main PC with all my pics went down last night, it's very serious.. so no Phil Baugh shots for a bit.

Having been a fan for several years,I first met Phil in Nashville at the Best Western,aka...hall of shame. I believe it was the summer of 1983. I was a new kid in town working the road with John Anderson and went down to hear Paul Franklin and Sid Hudson who by the way knocked my socks off,and ran into Phil at the bar. We talked like we had known each other for years and he bought me a beer and a pizza. I can't tell you what an impression he made on me. Granted...he'd probably had a few before I got there but he treated me with respect and all the way home I kept thinking,WOW,one of my heroes just bought me a beer and a pizza! I never did really know him but he seemed liked a good hearted fella to me and I miss his great music.
