Hello all,
I need some advice on various methods of attaching the neck of a lap steel to the solid body. Dove tail, mortise and tenon, or ??????
Thanks,
Phil

Hi, Philip.
Check out Loni's (Lapdancer lap steels) Tele/Strat onversion necks here:

http://www.lapdancerguitars.com/news.html

He makes an oversized square neck that bolts directly in the neck pocket of a conventional Tele or Strat body. It should work for you also. Most of us builders generally do neck thru body designs as it contributes to the instrument's ability to sustain notes.
Good luck on your build!

Hi Phil,

As you know I kind of like my lap steels all in one piece, or two pieces laminated together as one.

I would think it would make for better resonance.

Keep us posted as you progress. Cool

More details about your project and it's neck and body will greatly improve the ability to provide suggestions.

Aloha Denny,
To make a long story as short as possible, on page 7 or 8 of steel without pedals, there is a new lap steel shown under "My new lap Steel". This guitar was laminated out of 3/4x 1 1/2 hard maple, and the neck went the length of the guitar. While travelling thru Ohio, we stopped at the home of a friend. He has a wood shop, there was this piece of walnut that said"make a guitar out of me", so I am going to. But I can only afford the time and $ to build one, soooooo,
I am taking the neck section off of the maple guitar and combining it with the wanut body, now how is that? Now do I use a lap joint, dove tail, or mortise???
Thanks,
Phil

As Denny points out, more info on your project would be very helpful.

That said, there are several ways to go about it.
I'm a big fan of neck through and one piece designs.
Bolt on and set neck tenon type construction works too.
I guess a lot will depend on stock you have to work with as to what is best for your project.

Hey Philip, looks like you posted just before me Smile

Is this the donor guitar your talking about?

.

If so, does the fretboard come off?
For that I'd say a set neck with tenon might be the ticket.

Though, you could still do a neck through.
If you wanted an all walnut top, you could re-saw a top from the walnut blank, plane down the neck portion that is to be covered, attach wings, then apply the re-sawed top.
