multiple bands one set

Skip Edwards mentioned in a post about the California country scene or lack of about "multiple bands one set" not 5 stes a night like we used to do .
This has happened in Melbourne Australia as well . Instead of booking a band for a night , the owner or agent books 3, 4 or more acts and each one does one set . Now there are a lot of acts that start up , learn 7-10 songs and start working { for next to nothing :- 4 .}
10/20 years ago you needed a repetoire of 30/40 songs to get through a nights playing . I don't like this trend at all and I think it encourages 3rd rate acts and 3rd rate venues to flourish making it harder and harder to earn a quid .
Any thoughts on this ?

The bottom line is the pay, IMHO. Sure, I'll play only one set, but don't expect much of a discount from what I'd charge for 4 or 5 sets. Winking

Most of the "work" is setting up and tearing down. Of course, for the typical "hat singer", it's pretty easy to just pull the ol' flat-top out of the case, and then throw it back in and split to do another one set gig somewhere's else. Surprised
