It has to do with not having several windings of string on the tuner peg. Pretty sure this has been discussed a few times in the past. Think of it as being like a tunerless design.

They aren't "fiddly" as it does not require head bolt torque specs. Just the time and hassle of changing strings/a string, is well worth having them, not to mention better tuning stability. Just my 2 cents.

When did you last clean the changer? And maybe check the lower return springs to make sure they haven't got weak and are pulling away from the stop...just a couple thoughts :)

My home made project psg has round shafts and they don't slip ever.....but that's likely to be a result of using hardened, tempered, 5/16" motor shaft rod with a full length key way for the set screws to seat.

Yes Hylands does work pretty well as it contains cinchona bark which has been a main source of quinine for hundreds of years. This is the way around the fact that the FDA banned quinine sulfate for leg cramps in 1994, Drs can't even prescribe it, oh except for 1 specific brand which retails for 4$ pl...

Put the stuck ones in some solventt like mineral spirits and soke them a bit. The grease they put in older Sperzels gets dry and kinda hardens over time, so after the soak 30 min take one by one and start gently turn and work them you may have to take a small screwdriver or similar to help breakup t...
