Excel Superb SD12 8x8 in Canada

I have been the third owner of this c. 2005 guitar, since 2012. It is in very good overall condition, sounds great and stays in tune well. It is set up E9/B6 U12 with a lock lever and a three lever center group and a second RKR that drops down for pure 6th tuning play with the lock engaged, giving a...

That is a lovely guitar Dave.

Does it sound like the old rack and barrel ShoBud single 10's? If so, it is definitely a keeper.

I missed the part about the fourth lever. Coffee hadn't kicked in at that point. Maybe Mullen still has an original knee lever kit and rack kicking around.
Feeling lucky?

To mod or not?

Two questions apply here. One: Is this easily reversible? and Two: Are there any holes to be drilled/cut or other changes to what you already have? The answers are Yes and No, so this is an easy choice. All you need is two barrels, another rod to reach your second pedal, and a string of the appropri...

Greetings from Victoria, Cappone.

You will need to use the extra rod method to accomplish those splits to C because the split screws set the lowest note on the string.
Time to call Mullen for the rods you need.

Add your E lower lever with string six lowered a whole step you get B major, the V chord, and if you release the sixth string lower it makes B6, add the B pedal and you get B7, all in tune . Very useful changes. Can't emphasize too much that the sixth string lower must be on the opposite knee from t...

Compensators are most often used to adjust the first and seventh string F# notes to sound "sweet" as a sixth with pedals A&B down. Cabinet drop takes this part of the way but some players feel the need for more. As for having the G# on string six stay at F# with the B pedal down, I don...

That under carriage seems pretty clean, complete and mostly unaltered, Joe. Another rod to hook up the string 10 raise on the B pedal would be nice. You will also want another rod to set up split tuning on the string 6 lower to F#, which I prefer on the LKR, along with string 1 raise to G. Not havin...

Joe, Newman's Uni setup is a pretty good place to start, but I see lever locations aren't listed in the copedent you get through the link here, probably because Jeff mostly played Day and didn't use a LKR. I'd suggest you go to the Williams Guitar Co. site, select technical info, then copedents from...

To clarify a little, you need to look at the four note diatonic chords. G major: G6 spelled G,B,D,E contains the same four notes as Emi7, spelled E,G,B,D. The first three notes of these chords are the major and minor triads, and the fourth note in each case is an extension of the triad, a sixth and ...

Looks like a kind of mashup between Ext. E9 and E9/B6. You should probably pick one or the other. Lots of pedals and levers for a nice uni or an ultra loaded Ext E9. Pedals and levers are pretty much E9/B6 except those two LL levers. Can you mic the strings and see what gauges you have on the bottom...

I think you might easily be creating a problem by moving your 2 & 9 lowers to LKR. Finessing the half stop while operating various A B C pedal combinations is not something I'd want to deal with. I suspect that is why that change seems to me the most *carved in stone" of E9 lever locations....

I might add that this is likely an E9/B6 Uni, but a good clear shot of the whole undercarriage and one of the endplate showing the nylon tuners will allow us to suss out the copedent PDQ.

Cheers, CR.

Nice find. I had one of these for several years and wish I hadn't sold it in one of my periods when PSG got too frustrating. It came between a Sierra and a Carter, (all U12 guitars) and was the best of the three, IMO. That switch is for the pickup, which is a George L 12-5, I believe. 5 different so...

PCB amps aren't all created equal. Take an 80's Boogie, for example. Heavy fiberglass mil spec board, probably plated thru holes, all controls, jacks and tube sockets mounted solidly to the chassis, all wired together by hand. Or an SWR bass head, same deal, rugged, built to last decades. Compare th...

Marc, got it. Still, how does that dim. triad on 8-7-5 with 7 up a half and 5 down a half sound/ Sweeter than the F lever alone on 8-6-5?

I'll PM the shop address and my phone number. Text me. My shop hours are somewhat, shall we say, irregular. :)

Hey Marc, I can't recall seeing anyone with both F#-G and B-A# changes before. Not surprising that you like the diminished triad you get that way better than the F lever one, which can sound pretty sour with the "sweetened" tunings, bad enough that some good players prefer to use the slant...

For a fifth lever, Mr. G, I would select John Swain's vertical. Look at the big stack of fourths on srings 8,6,5,3. and you can augment or diminish the fourth between 5 and 3 with your right knees. Modern quartal harmony anyone? Fills in the missing note in my pentatonic scales too. I am going to pu...

Yes, no surprise that a hot young player with eclectic tastes and big ears would grab the opportunity to hang with Lenny, who has been one of my main guys since I got his first album (?) in'69. Grind a bevel on the end of the rod you are about to thread. Then fix it firmly in a vise with out too much protrusion or you may bend the end of the rod. I use my nylon jaw Panavise; to get a good non slip grip I fold a strip of fine emery cloth over the rod. This won't mar the rod much if at all. ...

Lots of U12 players lower string 2 to C# along with the E lowers. It will make the lever throw a little longer and stiffer but you'll get used to it. (Lower 2 to D on another lever that usually raises string 9 B to D . Some players lower string 8 to D on that lever, allowing them to eliminate pedal ...

Paul, I wonder if your last comment was about not blocking behind the bar at the harmonic nodes and picking behind the bar? I watched Greg L. do that several times on a Frisell gig where I got to sit twenty odd feet from the band in a 110 seat venue (!!!). He usually did it with his big glass bar. I...
