I'll second the non slip shelf liner. Cheap and works, just cut a small piece and put it on a knee then lay steel on it. No need to fasten to back of steel guitar or anything.
I've tried stands, consoles etc. In the end I just prefer playing on lap. Shelf liner pad helps.

George Boards had some nice conversion kits to make them 22.5". He does have some good vinyl sticker fretboards for sale on his site in various lengths, My favorite scale is 23", though 22.5" is absolutely fine for me as well. I have a Rouge short scale that I changed the pickup and n...

[quote= Do know what wood is used? Seems pretty dense. Mahogany?[/quote] I have a Vega just like that one. Really good guitar. I read somewhere that they ate made of "gum wood". Not sure what that is. But, yeah they are heavy, solid feeling steels. Great tone. I got a Vega Triumphant as we...

Rogue lap steels are a decent choice for an inexpensive steel. I've got a fair number of steels, but still keep my old Rogue that I've had for years. I replaced the nut early on. And then replaced the pickup. Actually sounds pretty good. I don't think I've used the legs more than 2 or 3 times. Just ...

Do you mean the Grover nut hangs over the edges of the feet board? Like it's too wide?
If so; I would say use it anyway. If you use the Grover nut, I can't imagine the action isn't high enough.

I just want to second the recommendation for Sebastion's tab and backing tracks. Really good stuff. Just got a few the other day. Stacy Phillips books are great. I kind of skipped over the first volume and just started working through some of volume 2. I have an old square neck Oahu acoustic; but I ...

I'll second recording king. Never tried a g style, though I read some reviews. They seem pretty hit or miss. I did have an older SX....kinda not so good... I've had a few SX guitars..regular guitars (armpit guitars as opposed to lap guitars) that were pretty good. One I still have that is great for ...

Thanks for the replies! I ended up cobbling together a set from a bunch of strings I already had. ended up: low to high .046 .036 .030 .022 .018 .014 I think next time I may try a 42 for the low A and maybe a 32 for the low E. But it works well enough. Coming from almost exclusively playing C6 and C...

string gauge A C# E A C# E

Been wanting to try low to hi A C# E A C# E tuning (high bass A) on a 22.5" scale instrument. Having a hard time figuring out what string gauges I need for the lowest three. For the high A C# E, I'm thinking .022 .018 .016. any suggestions appreciated for the other gauges I need. Anyone else he...

23 inch scale length. I think all the Vega lap steels are 23.

I liked the first few minutes the most. Really reminded me of some of Brian Eno's stuff. I'm a big Eno fan. Love his ambient stuff. I used to play a bit with a looper (EHX 1440) midi sync'd with Korg Volca's or sometimes just play along with Korg Volca's. Definitely gets creative juices flowing. Kee...

all great advice and info. I'll add that I tend to only use open D on Acoustic instruments that are longer scaled then my lap steels. I do keep one lap steel in open E, however. I use GHS strings for that one. They sell a set just for open E. It runs low to high: 58-46-34-22-18-14 works great for E,...

HeneHena Kou Aka on a Vega Commander

Here's a little video of me attempting to play a rather jazzy version of "Henahena Kou Aka". I'm attempting the tune from Alan Akaka's version. I am no way as smooth as that dude; but it's fun trying. Mainly I was thinking there wasn't a lot of video or sound clips (that I could find) of t...

good advice so far; yep; move your volume pedal further away; and no; you don't have to use a volume pedal. And actually you may not want one depending on style of playing. I occasionally use one. Especially if I want to mimic pedal steel a bit or play more country style. My biggest problem is I ten...
