I wish steel manufacturers would use replaceable changer top caps. Changer wear on top is a common issue and causes premature string breakage and oftentimes string buzzing. Gregg, My old RusLer steel has replaceable tops on the finger radii. I never had to do it, but, I could turn it around or swit...

I can t count the amount times that people call it a keyboard or have no idea what I'm playing. And, I tried explaining what is it and some seem to get it while others are clueless about it. The people who seem to get it somewhat are musicians, especially the ones who play guitar..

At 74, sometimes I FEEL like it's me. All the moving, setting up and breaking down and loading has aged me a lot in the last several years. I really need a dedicated roadie!

I've played a few free gigs in the past. We had been approached by club owners, promoters and people who wanted to have a live band venue. So,e of them were benefit shows to help someone or their family. Others were some kind of cause or something like that. I got no pay for any of them. I ( we) tho...

I've been playing my U-12 for 20 years set up to Jeff Newmans copedent, however, I used the standard ABC pedals. I lower my strings 4+8 on my RKR lever, which, frees up my left foot and knee to choose any pedal or knee lever without constrictions. I must say that, though I play mostly E-9th and am s...

I've never responded to any of these posts because I don't have an authentic answer to this tone question. However, after playing for near 50 years, I feel that your technique has a fair amount to what you produce in sound. But, you must have proper, pro equipment to enhance your "tone". A...

My first show was in 74'. And, boy was I in shock and awe, when, I saw it. I couldn't get my head straightened out for a week. I attended every show up until 2011. They were all quite the experience and wonderment. Every Labor Day weekend I can't help but think about the big steel show!

Bob Maickel

Bob Maickel, the founder and president of The Pedal Steel Guitar Association passed away last weekend. He had been in ill health lately and took a fall at his house and passed shortly after at the hospital. He was a founding father and had been at the helm of the PSGA since 1973. He was an avid supp...

Having literally no knowledge of pedal steels, I bought by first one in 1974. It was a Sho-Bud Maverick with 3+1. To me it's was the cats meow. So much to learn by myself. After finding more knowledgeable players and wanting to play more advanced chords, I searched for a more suitable steel. I playe...

At least once a year I remove all the strings and clean well and lube everything up lightly. However, when I do change my strings, intermttingly as I do, I do it one at a time. I start with the first and work my way back. I cut them about 1 1/2 " past the post and after tuning them close I pull...

I took music in grade school and had a hell of a time associating the notes in a timely fashion. It was discovered that I had a form of dyslexia. That has plagued me all my life. However, I had a great musical ear and good musical memory. I've been lucky in that sense, but, unlucky with the overall ...
