F.S.: !950s FENDER STRINGMASTER T-8 $1300

!950s (between '56 and '59?) Fender Stringmaster T-8 Steel Guitar. Three eight string necks. The necks are of the 24.5" scale length, as generally preferred for slightly better sustain and tone up the neck. This guitar has been un-finished: it appears a brown stain and perhaps a non-gloss, thin...

FS: Lab Series L-9 Amplifier

I have for sale a late 70s-early 80s Lab Series L-9 amplifier. Other than a big tube amp (Twin, Vibrosonic) I consider this to be the ultimate steel guitar combo amp. 100 watts (real RMS rating compared to 100 "Peevee watts"), 15" EVM-15L speaker, and unlimited tonal control with a sw...

He's an all time favorite of mine. In replacing LPs lost to ex-girlfriends through the years, just this weekend I picked up Mike's first solo record and the Scene's first! Way to go Mr Auldridge!!

"Did he already play lap steel with his band Kaleidoscpe?" My recollection was that Kaleidescope was largely an acoustic act, and it may be where I first glimpsed a Weissenborn on Lindley's lap. Lindley turned the world on to lap steel, but it already was in my ears when I first heard him....

Is maple an ideal choice for a steel guitar? On a standard (Spanish-style, to us old-timers!) solidbody electric, it generally provides a brighter tonality that is less agreeable to most ears than the more commonly used ash, alder or mahogany. I have gone on record since the Dead Sea was merely ill,...

" If you're looking to date your Fender Stringmaster through the use of the serial number, you're out of luck."

Yes, it's only the pawnshop owners and other non-players selling steels on ebay who are convinced you can date a Fender steel by the serial number.

suggestions/strategies: take lessons!

"don't play a stringed instrument". Do you play piano? Any instrument with applied harmony theory? This will give you the best advantage starting steel guitar.

I didn't dig the song or singing much, but Leisz sounds his usual musical-as-hell, and I would hire that drummer in a half-a second!!!! I will never understand why 95% of the drumstick owners in the world won't just simply RELAX! Thanks for posting this.

Cool! I have had many old insts with their original pre- and post-WW II cases, and aesthetically appreciate the cases nearly as much as the insts. Perhaps this is why I disdain the current crappy cases with cheap, fuzzy linings and (the worst) indoor-outdoor carpet coverings! Thanks for posting!

I am just trying to become familiar with the standardized terminology in steel-dom (if there is any! re: lapsteel/Hawaiian/non-pedal steel/slidey-thingy)!!

I always employ the term "steel guitar". If some asks "pedal steel?, I always reply "nope, straight steel, no pedals". If they require more explanation I provide it. For whatever reason, I avoid the term "slide guitar" entirely. I call the technique employed by Ry ...

I believe the original keys for a lot of Chuck Berry's songs were Eb and Bb due to his piano player's (Johnny Johnson). Any piano man who comes up playing with horns will prefer the flat keys. For whatever reason, I find I prefer them on piano, too. I cannot play worth a crap in C!

Sorry for the negative commentary. No, I cannot even come close to executing as Jr does on the steel, and was glad to have the close-up look; thanks! But I stand by what I said about Tanya: blowing out an A string playing rhythm on an acoustic flat top, in the second song of the first set!! Ferociou...
