Thanks - and true but you still have some pull-offs and stuff so still nice to be in the right tuning. Anyway, open C seems to be working pretty well for me.

Thanks Nic! I will try those. I have played almost exclusively in open D and when I tried that briefly, it sounded way off so I wanted to check on here before I ventured deeper into it :)

Can anyone tell me which tuning this is?

Hi,

Can someone tell which tuning the lap steel player uses in this video? Great band by the way, Hermanos Gutiérrez:

Thanks for the replies everyone.

Does anyone know if these other brands (besides Hudson) are about the same weight? That would be about 15 lbs.

And it would be great to hear from others that have tried any of the different brands!

Opinions on Hudson 6-string pedal steels?

Hi all, I just found out about these which might just suit my need for a pedal steel that I don't need a car to transport. Has anyone tried one of these and care to tell about the experience? I'm looking at the 6-string models. http://www.hudsonsteelguitars.com/guitars.html And I should note that I ...

Perfect - thanks. It does look like I will have to find something other than my Gibson BR-6 if it's to work. There really isn't much space behind the bridge on that one.

I'll see if I can find something that fits. Peter den Hartogh, do you have any idea how much space the hipshot takes?

Thanks,
Hans

Thanks Peter and Peter! Peter Funk: Great playing! Do you have any idea how much space behind the bridge is required for the Duesenberg? Peter den Hartogh: The Hipshot knee lever sounds very interesting. Do you have pics or links to it? And also, I'm not quite sure what the strap bender is all about...

Hi Lee, That sounds very interesting - especially with the pedal option. I have just sent you a private message to hear more about this. Oh, and I didn't mean to write in my last message that I wanted to try it in Open D or E, but rather Open D or with the 6 strings tuned to the top 6 strings of how...

Thanks guys, Edit* About the tuning question I was planning to play in Open D or with the 6 strings tuned to the top 6 strings of how a 10-string E9 pedal steel is tuned (so from high to low): String 1: F-sharp Stg 2: D-sharp Stg 3: G-sharp Stg 4: E Stg 5: B Stg 6: G-sharp. Do you know how that migh...

String bender on a lap steel

Hi all, Wanting to get closer to a pedal steel sound, I have recently learned about the option of fitting string benders on a lap steel. Searching the forum, I have found some of you that have tried this, and so I would very much like to ask those of you who have dabbled with these string benders a ...

Hi Roman, It's a feeling that I'm not quite getting enough "difference" in volume when it's not set at silent. Also, I read somewhere that you need to strike the string at silent and then "turn up the volume" only when you've started sliding for the right effect. Don't know if th...

Hi again, So, I ended up buying the Boss FV-500H volume pedal since it has the minimum volume knob. One thing I've started to notice, though, is that I can't really use the knob for that much since I have to set the minimum level to silent in order to really get those swells going - is this right or...

Thanks for all the advice, guys! @Paul Seager - I had pretty much settled on the Ernie Ball EB6180 VP-JR, but reading your post, I've gotten concerned that I might miss the option to set a minimum volume level as you mention. As far as I understand this would allow me to use the pedal at lower volum...

For live performance, I just use a little delay and reverb. Usually whatever is built in the amp. Great - so with the Ernie Ball I should be able to get about as close to the sound in the youtube clip that I posted in the first post (as close as is possible when not on a pedal steel of course)? And...

Perfect! While I'm at it - do you have any other pedals in your arsenal that I might find of interest? :) And based on the link to your studio I guess you have tried the ernie ball for a lot of different kinds of music?

Thanks!

Thanks, Dom! So, are you using the exact same one as in the first link, the "Ernie Ball EB6180 VP-JR"? And is that the "passive" one? Also, do you know if there would be any advantage in choosing the one in the other link, the EB6181 (which as far as I can gather is 25 ohm instea...

Thanks, Stephen, that sounds great.

Do you know if there are any advantages to this model: http://www.thomann.de/dk/ernie_ball_eb6181.htm

or if there are other Ernie Ball (or other brands) that would do a better job?

Best,

Volume pedal for lap steel guitar

Hi all, So I would like to be able to make my Gibson BR-6 lap steel do the same sort of "creeping" sound as the pedal steel in this clip: http://youtu.be/rJG5qUuAkEE?t=3m47s As far as I can gather from online searches the way to do so is to get a volume pedal, so my question is which one I...

@Joe Burke: Great to hear! What gauge are you using for Open D (if you ever play in that tuning)?

Oh, sorry, I forgot to write that I'm playing in Open D tuning - guess that makes my suggested gauge a bit more realistic :)

And I've played lap slide for several years - just never experienced such a short scale.

Thanks,
Hans

What string gauge for 23" scale Gibson BR-6

Hi, So, I just got this beautiful Gibson BR-6 which is ònly 23" scale. Right now the strings on it are way too light (something like .011-.050) , and I was wondering what gauge would be the best fit for it? Maybe something like .017-.060? *EDIT: And I'm playing in Open D tuning. Also, picture:...

Thanks Steve, I'll do that.

And I just noticed that I wrote above that the guitar had a 22-1/5" scale - that was a typo, it is 25-1/5" scale (I've edited it now).

Best,
Hans
