The pics that kicked off this post are interesting, I can see from one that it was developed in September of '67, and we can assume it's from that period, taken within days or weeks of being developed. Willie's band should have been Eddie Rager on bass, Johnny Bush on vocals and guitar, Paul English...

That's the problem with fact checking everything but one key person's recall, you end up with a myth. "Brumley noted that the band recorded “Together Again” immediately following the Golden West performance dates, with this same Fender 1000 (Bradshaw 1976). Within this context of a damaged inst...

If you'e referring to the two onstage photos at the start of this topic, the first with Haggard fronting the band is from no earlier than 1962, with Ralph Mooney on the left, the drummer might be Speedy Young, who worked with the first shift band, Merle, Roy and George French on piano. Both Mooney a...

There's various pics of Roy on this page, including one of him playing the doubleneck at the Foothill Club.

The timeline suggested here might be a bit off, I assume someone told you Roy had the doubleneck in 1959-1960, but these pics are from the Nashville Nevada Club, which opened in late 1961, and Merle Haggard didn't join that group until April of 1962. Sure, I'm almost a decade late to post this, but ...

Old post, but just ran across while researching Leodie.

Leodie was with Jimmie Dolan's band in late 1951, he recorded with Dolan on at least two sessions in 1952, which is presumably when the first photo is from.

Jimmy played with the Cody crew in early 1974, Bobby Black wrapped up his first stint around the end of 1973, not long after the Airmen recorded their first official live album. There was a temp player in between Jimmy joining and Bobby quitting, that was David Wright, then Jimmy joined for a month ...

Regarding Mitch's pic, I'm assuming that's 1962 when Donnie Young-Paycheck rejoined on bass, and Buddy Spicher was probably the newest member as I've seen pics of the same group, except Shorty Lavender was on fiddle rather than Spicher. That band was assembled after Willie Nelson split to form his o...

I might point out that despite a thriving live scene, Bluegrass never really seems to have broken out in the SoCal area, except for the Ash Grove. Ken's post mentions that he'd been in the L.A. area for 40 years, not sure when that period began, but Clarence White was killed in 1973, and the Ash Gro...

I've been thinking about these pics [the Stone Arch Ranch set], I keep seeing them on forums and posts. Technically I don't think it's the Tunetoppers, if the pics are from 1950, the Tunetoppers were Lefty Frizzell's band, which evolved into the Western Cherokees, and used different pickers in 1950,...

A very cool record, I stumbled across it online by chance the week it came out. As noted there's no steel, Jay Dee had quit the group earlier in 1970 and Buck didn't hire Jerry Brightman until 1971. I can't figure why they didn't broaden the CDs length by adding Don's 1971 solo album The Fiddlin' Ma...

Red Rhodes name has popped up, which is how I find this discussion. Red didn't actually record for Alshire in the 1960s, his Alshire LP came out a decade after this Bakersfield Five LP and is totally unrelated to how the Bakersfield Five LP came to be. Is it possible he played on the Bakersfield Fiv...

I recall interviewing a chap from Wisconsin who recorded with rock bands and moved to LA to play the Valley clubs and focus on a record deal in the mid 1960s. The Valley clubs were a mix of country, rock and lounge gigs, some venues had all of the above (Lazy X) and he told me that Inman's band at t...

Clarence has been credited on some Gosdin sessions that were Carl Walden on dobro, their "Hangin' On" 45 is all Carl and pre-dates Clarence joining the Gary Paxton stable of session cats.
