Oh Man...B.E's take on "Wichita Lineman" is just too much. I love the song as it is but, to hear it done like that, the melancoly just tears yer heart out...in a good way  More than once it's made me shed a tear after a couple of pops  Is there any tabs for it out there? Inciden...

Funky Kings?

Hi Folks, I've been listening to some music online at www.wolfgangsvault.com. For those who are into classic rock of the 60's and 70's, it's a real goldmine as the "Vault Radio" broadcasts are all live recordings of all the old Bill Graham shows from classic venues such as The Filmores (ea...

Had to echo the sentiments posted here. Just such wonderful, heartfelt playing Al. For those that have never visited Al's web page, it's fascinating...check it out. Al is a treasure and it's certainly nice to see this footage and hope there is more to come! Best wishes Al and good work Drew! Keep it...

I also had off and on service of the convention on SteelRadio.com , same as last year. Bad weather both years. It is frustrating but I heard some great moments both last year and this year. If you take it for what it is (limited), it's pretty cool. ...must commend the Steel Radio crew (Miss Lana et ...

Wow, This thread is bigger and better than I would have imagined. I figured on a bunch of folks just telling me to tough it out with the picks. I've gotten that but I've also seen there are a lot more that use bare fingers than I thought. In terms of Joe Wright's pick blocking technique, I find that...

"I've seen too many beginning steelers use the bare fingers "preference" as an argument, when they really just don't want to get over the inital awkard feeling when first using finger picks (and yes, learn to use the volume pedal too!)." Thanks David. That quote is likely more tr...

Have to bump this one up for my fellow countrymen Al Brisco and Steve Smith. Had the pleasure of hearing Steve Smith play with The Wilkinsons about a month ago here in town. I also heard Steve jamming with Bob Taillefer and others at Al's store when I went to pick my first steel back in December. Aw...

Some great responses. Thank you all. To Richard Burton, I listened to your clip. Nice playing. I did hear the picks. I like the comment Jeff Newman makes in his "PSG Tech." DVD refering to pick blocking. He demonstrates the noise of picks meeting vibrating strings and says "Now, you d...

Interesting. At least we got one finger player to chime in. I'm trying to stick with the picks but I just leave em off sometimes. I find Joe Wright's 'pick blocking' technique and(W)right hand position easier without picks on.Go figure. I know a guy, 6 stringer and steeler, who uses the acrylic nail...

picks or fingers?

I'm a beginner and I'm curious to see how many (if any) players use their bare fingers and not finger picks. I play six string and have always used a combination of a flat pick and my 2nd and 3rd fingers for picking. Now don't worry. I'm not gonna use a flat pick on the steel!I been at the steel sin...

Hey Jack, I've recently read posts about Joe's thought on Jeff's approach and techniques and,I guess, vice versa as Jeff had strong opinions about the "right way" to do things. I'm forunate to have had the chance to see Joe Wright play twice in the last few months at the Legion in Waterdow...

Hi Russ

Thanks for the welcome. We certainly have a bunch of great steel players in our neck of the woods, eh?

Steve Smith, Pee Wee Charles, Bob Lucier, Bob Tailifer, Al Brisco and I'm sure there's more. Oh...Joey Ace!

Are you aware of any that teach?

Cheers!

Even as a new comer to the steel community, I can see what a great loss it is not to have Jeff Newman with us. I have started with Jeff's "Psg Techniques" beginners course. What a great teacher he was. Had the same demeanor as many of my favorite teachers in school. His kindness and encour...

Thank you Gentlemen, To Jake, got it. No spurs. I don't even wear shoes when I'm playing so no worries about tearin up the rug! I should probably find me some steelin shoes and get used to them. To Colby, I'm stuck on the instrument already. It is a challenge but I'm doing o.k with it. Already being...

Hello All, Just became a member but, I've been "lurking" for quite some time now. Have been the proud owner of a Carter SD-10 since December after having dreamt about it for a year or so. I'm a 6 stringer(25 yrs.) and I've always been fascinated by the sound of the pedal steel although I w...
