Scotty has apparently contracted for a specific percentage of webcast coverage, most likely limiting the "main acts" to a few tunes worth.
I complained on here a couple of years ago, and was told (essentially) that I should be grateful we get anything...
so now I am.
[This message was edited by Dave Van Allen on 01 September 2006 at 09:17 PM.]

Paul I think you made a good point. If you (those who decided to do this webcast) are going to webcast parts of the Live show from St. Louis, then do it in some logical manner so a listener don't have to listen to 2 hours of Color Commentary and recorded music just to hear 10 minutes of the Live Program.
After 2 hours I decided it wasn't worth it.
That's my take on it.

Well folks, I am sorry many of you seem disappointed with our airing schedule but it is true that we are allowed to only air a couple of songs here and there. I was in charge of creating the airing schedule and I tried to hit the main highlights with with limited amount of time that I was given. As with many shows, the preference is to 'see' you here instead of 'hearing' you there. I would love to bring you the whole show but that is out of my control.
As for the problems with the buffering, technology is great but Mother Nature is greater. There may be a day when technology overcomes but I'm afraid it may not be in my lifetime.
Thanks for those who have been tuning in and I hope you continue. Today we have several hot shows going on. So please stay tuned.
Miss Lana

Though it may not be perfect, THANK YOU for at least trying to air it for those of us that didn't get to go.

I had been looking forward to listening to Laney's Operation: "Russless" portion of the show. I have the CD but hearing it performed live on the ISGC stage with her reading the letters that came in from each "mystery" steeler and hearing her explain Russ's reaction to each one would have been nice. Didn't take me long to give up on that. Hey to all of you who don't really know that pair or don't see them often, you don't know what you are missing. They are a hoot!

I would like to comment here that I feel there was too much switching from the stage to other rooms wher players were performing. I love to listen to Reece play but would rather here him on the stage.
A great job is being done by Miss Lana and I appreciate her efforts, no matter what we hear.
I at least heard Buddy and Herby (most all of it) even with the storm.

I am happy to get what I heard so far. I enjoy the interviews too.
I have a slow ISP so can expect a certain amount of Buffering.
So I missed some sections of the show, but all in all I want to thank Scotty for Steel Radio and you Lana , Bill and everyone for all the work you are doing....al

First I want to say thanks to Scotty for giving those of us that can not be in St Lo a little taste of the good life. I have talked to him in the past and know that not everyone that plays want their music put on the air. There are copywrite issues too.
However, I have just about waisted my weekend sitting in front of this damn computer trying to listen to some of the show. I sit at this while I am working too and would have liked a break. Now I know that no one made me do it. It is a constant problem keeping the stream going. I don't know if it was the storm or not. I nomally just pick up Steel Radio and it plays all day without interuption. It would be better if I did not have the expectation of getting to listen to the live broadcast. I think one of my longest streams during Buddy's Sunday was just over 2 minutes long. Most were only about 20 -50 seconds.
Thanks for letting me vent. The convention is about over now so I can go relax. I would like to hear Herbie yet.

I also had off and on service of the convention on SteelRadio.com , same as last year. Bad weather both years. It is frustrating but I heard some great moments both last year and this year. If you take it for what it is (limited), it's pretty cool.
...must commend the Steel Radio crew (Miss Lana et al) on doing what they can with what they have. It's an obvious labour of love. Running a deal like that can't be easy, especially with technological and contractual restrictions. Thanks folks!~ Was nice to hear what I could thanks to your efforts.
Missed Al Brisco's set again this year! Did Al make the broadcast at all? Hope so for those who had a clear signal at that moment,;-p....
I'm goin' next year...almost made it last minute this year...
Cheers to the Steel Radio for bringing it a little closer this year!

I want to thank everyone who posted on the several threads going about this year's ISGC. Last year we tried to capture parts of every set on the main stage and the comments that Scotty read - 'heard the whole thing on SteelRadio' - although positive but incorrect was one reason for more restrictions this year. I tried to compensate by providing broadcasts of the events going on outside the main ballroom and with interviewing the players. I even went as far as to ask Scotty if I could get all of Al Brisco's set because he did a tribute to Buck Owens and Ralph Mooney. But he said no. I had to submit our airing schedule for approval and what we tried to do was what he approved.
I truly believe the event would have been much better if we did not have the technical difficulties that we had. I can safely say that the problems we encountered had nothing to do with our equipment as some of the emails I received indicated. Weather problems in NY, the hotel losing their Internet (which we were tied to), the power supply all contributed to our problems. As for the listeners, most of you know the dial up conections cause buffering but this year the DSL lines had issues. We can only suspect that this was due to the technical issues and the 2 million people connected. I did receive several emails from all over the world that said they were having no problems and heard the broadcasts clearly. We know from past experience that each time we go over 1 million connections we drop out as we are switched to another server. But the other problems were out of our control. Our transmission out of St. Louis was continuous with only a few exceptions.
What we could have, did, bring to you over SteelRadio was nothing compared to what the conventioners experienced. The visuals, conversations, and just being in the same room with the great Buddy Emmons cannot be transmitted over any airwave. It was a highlight for me to interview Reece Anderson and bring him a very special telephone call. And I was very upset to receive an email during that time from someone named Cheryl telling me to quit talking and play some more music. Well Cheryl, all I can say is you obviously have no idea what it feels like to be able to talk with a legendary picker who was just inducted into the HOF. Or to talk with the future of steel guitar - a 14 year old boy, blind since birth who plays his heart out and has the best perspective in the world. Or someone like Herb Steiner - to have that kind of knowledge and talent sitting across from you, excited about sharing the information was incredible. I am fortunate that I was able to talk with these folks on the air and off. Perhaps next year you should attend the ISGC if you want to hear just the music.
For those of you who were frustrated with trying to get SteelRadio for the convention, imagine how frustrated we were trying to 'fix' problems that we could not control. I appreciate deeply those who communicated with us about the transmission - letting us know about the sound quality, etc. Larry Cohen, Simon Parr, Darin Hamilton - THANK YOU for your help.
I also want to thank everyone that came by the booth to say hello and ask about SteelRadio.
One last thing...It bothers me greatly that the transmission was like it was but know I did the best that I could with what I had. I hope you all accept that. Now I must go and prepare for my show on Saturday.
Thanks!
Miss Lana

Thank you very much for all your efforts, Miss Lana. You can only do so much. It's a shame that Scotty puts such tight restrictions on the broadcast. I really don't think that the number of people attending the convention would drop if the whole thing were broadcast live. Listening to it on the computer just cannot compare to the live experience; however, many of us just do not have the funds or the time to attend. I'm grateful for the bits that I got to hear, but it was very frustrating to have everything start working just fine for a change, about the time you had to break away from the live performance. Oh well......

About the SteelRadio.com live broadcast from the International Steel Guitar Convention. I often have said, "If it works, give me credit for it, if it doesn't work then you can blame me for it". I would really like to air it all. But for some reason I'm thinking it wouldn't be fair to all the people that come to the Convention, pay dearly for it, and then air the entire Convention to everyone else for free.
I really don't like the wording "hey, you didn't pay anything so what's the big deal?" Obviously, due to circumstances beyond our control, the station does have it's problems. Our server lets us down and the weather in certain parts of the world lets us down. If you did have to pay to hear it and these problems occured then SteelRadio.com would have a problem on their hands. Unfortunately it takes a lot of money to insure that a radio station will be perfect all the time. The money is not there yet. If we could get sponsorship then the money would be there to insure a good reception all the time. Michael and Lana contribute 98% of their time that is devoted to SteelRadio.com for free. We have a few people that do live shows to help out too but no one gets paid.
Donations from you listeners just might make it possible to help them accomplish their goals. If everyone that listens to the radio would send in $5.00 each it would be enough money to go even more professional with the station. Problably just a $1.00 donation would do it. And make it a monthy donation.
To this date you can count on just two hands the number of people that have contributed any money as a donation. If SteelRadio.com got the proper money they need it would be possible to hire people to run the station on 8 hour shifts and not expect two people (it used to be just one!) to do it all. Does anyone have any suggestions on how the station can raise money?
Let's all pull together and make SteelRadio.com work for everyone.
Scotty
