That Vollrath-Spicher Air Mail Special CD is exceptional - terrific C6 playing by Buddy Emmons. A favorite cut for me is the Stuff Smith tune, 'Skip It.'

Roland GS6
I use one exclusively as a preamp into a Nash 400. I bought it used long ago because I was looking for the following features in a single box: parametric eq, delay, reverb, chorus and noise reduction. It also has a notch filter. It includes a bunch of digital preamp overdrives/distortions etc. I set...

To add to Bob's excellent suggestions, it is helpful to use a re-entrant tuning where you have a 7th or 9th (or both) as strings 1 and 2. Bill Hatcher's great playing shows how useful these notes are to emulate the E9 pedal sounds. It sure helps to have a 10 string guitar but with an 8 string you ca...

Andy - This has been my 8 string E tuning of choice for a long time. It is very versatile for melody playing and tight chord voicings - dominant chords all over with both easy forward slants and straight bar. The thing that originally attracted me to this tuning was its familiarity with the E9 pedal...

Paul Bigsby book and NPR profile
I don't know if anybody else caught the NPR interview with Andy Babiuk, author of "The Story of Paul A. Bigsby: Father of the Modern Electric Solidbody Guitar." Anyway, interesting stuff with sound clips of Murph, Speedy and others. http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=1015...

To get Leavitt chords I use (Low to High) on 8 string: Bb C# E G A C E b. The high b is a half step below the 3rd string C. The middle six strings is normal C6/A7. Strings 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, and 1 are the Leavitt tuning but transposed down a minor third. You get all the C6/A7 you may be familiar with, p...

I do this also (on an 8 string so I can still keep the low G string). Moving between Bb6 and G6 just requires retuning 2 strings - one up a half step (Bb to B) and the other down a half step (F to E) so string gauges work out fine. I tend to play it more in the G6 tuning even though I'm more familia...

Ben, I use my ring finger (sometimes helped by my pinky) to bend behind the bar. I don't have the strength otherwise especially for a whole step bend. The only whole step bend that I attempt is with a lighter gauge chromatic 'B' above the C6 tuning high E string. Grab the lower E and A strings at so...

Ben, I just gave that track a quick listen: sounds like the harmonic is struck and then pedaled up in pitch a whole tone (on the E9 neck, either the A or C pedal). (Buddy is playing PSG on the track I think.) Normally on a lap steel such pitch changes are done via sliding as mentioned in a earlier p...

On my 8 string dobro I use the tuning that Ernest mentioned but tuned down a whole step: GBDEGBbDc. (Bb6/G7) The advantage for me is that by tuning the 3rd string up a half step and the 5th down a half I easily get into a G6 tuning for doing typical dobro stuff. (GBDEGBDc) The c on top is very usefu...
