Sho Bud 12 Universal

I'm selling my Bud. Too much back strain for me to move now, unfortunately. The guitar includes the hard shell case and a Sho Bud volume pedal. george L's pickup with six position selector switch. Condition is very good--a few bar dings, but, overall, very nice. $1400 shipped in USA. Pics at: http:/...

Jim Simon--What you've been through sounds like a nightmare and a half. I would like to talk to you and will try to give you a call. I hope that after all you have gone through that you are getting some relief. Mike Baldwin--I'm hoping I don't have to go that far down the road, but it is encouraging...

Hi Russ! Read what Ron Page says about exercise for the back. You might be able to avoid serious trouble later on by getting those back muscles strong now. From what I've read, once you start to have back issues, you need to keep up the exercises to avoid more trouble. Most people that keep up the e...

Thanks Ariel, Charles and Roy--I'm getting some good ideas here. I met with my neurosurgeon yesterday. First thing I discovered is that I have three herniated discs--not one. The doc said that my back looks "pretty normal for my age--backs are designed to fail." Actually, two of the discs ...

Roy--Yes, I meant to ask you about your recovery time! Got a little confused there--wrote Steve and meant Roy. Hey, I may be dumb but I'm slow. http://steelguitarforum.com/biggrin.gif Thanks for that reply. 15 pounds, eh? So, did you keep playing steel? And how did you get it around? Hey, at least y...

I see I am not alone and I have great empathy for all of you who are dealing with back troubles. I felt ten feet tall and bulletproof until I herniated that disk. Now, I'm feeling pretty humbled. Steve--I have the Pain Free book. I'm waiting to do the exercises until I confer with my next doctor. Th...

Roy and Steve--I just saw your responses, which came in as I was making my reply. Steve--Thats the route I'm looking at. I don't want surgery if there's any chance that I can get better without it. I'm a strong believer in the power of nature as far as the body healing itself goes. Thanks for your i...

I'd like to thank everyone for the responses. I feel lucky to be associated with such a compassionate group of people. I've even had a couple of personal e-mails from people who don't know me and were sending advice. I was unaware of the risks of ibuprofen. I've been taking three Motrin a day for a ...

Steel Players and Back Problems

To begin, I am now afflicted with a herniated disk. Seems like I read all the time about steelers who have back problems. Obviously, the weight of the instrument and amp don't help matters, but what about the posture of sitting at the steel to play it? I know it puts a significant strain on my back ...

Ken--If you do make up some kits, please e-mail me and let me know. I know I'm in need of some new filter caps too, but Georgia is an expensive shipping proposition. Could you tell me what I need and where to order? I have built a couple amps myself from kits, but I don;t know what I need for the ca...

I could care less about credentials. If thats what I am supposed to judge any of you by, then shame on me. Not that I don't place certain players in my own definition of "legendary" status, but I think anybody who has the passion and the desire can learn to make great music. To dismiss a b...

The only "gotcha" I can think of is that some universals put the knee levers in different places. I gave a lesson today to guy who had a steel with the "D" lever (e to eb) on left knee right, and mine is right knee right. A couple of the other levers were in a different spot too....

I want to play it all, but I spend a fair amount of time learning classic country steel licks and ideas. I've found that if I learn the basics, those ideas can be put in other musical settings with good result. Sometimes, playing other styles makes me learn something new out of necessity. Good music...

I had a similar problem this year. I played a room that was so bad, even humbuckers had a bit of buzz. Regretfully, I took out my TruTone and put the George L's back in my steel. I recently read that Suhr Guitars is making an after market product for guitarists that turn single coils into noiseless ...

I'd probably try a Pro-Mat. And have my Sho Bud rebuilt with Coop parts. Two steels is enough. Oh, wait--I lied. I'd want one of those new MSA Superslides too!

In the last week, I played three gigs with my blues group (I played guitar--not steel). The first job was recorded by the sound man and I got to hear what my tone sounded like after the fact. It dawned on me that my Tele was too bright, yet, being a creature of habit, I set all my gear the same for ...

Kevin--You want to probably get the amp to a tech who knows these amps. I second all Jerry says and would add that there are probably some resistors that drop the voltage that go to the preamp tubes that are probably needing replacement. As the amp warms up some of the components are experiencing fa...

Picking--Heavy, soft? What is your touch?

I've tried picking various ways and have come to the conclusion that a soft touch with the right hand seems to work best for me. I was once told, "Light touch with the right hand, solid pressure with the bar." Do you vets agree with this general idea, or not? I'm always open to the convent...

When I started to learn steel, it was on borrowed instruments that were S-10. Practically speaking, after trying to lift a D-10 and practically ruining my back, I decided against the D-10. When I was offered a Sho-Bud 12 Universal, the guy was nice enough to let me try it for a few months. I eventua...
