I probably should have posted this at the beginning of the thread. When I first heard about this new DvD I asked Doug what his plans were. This is what he said. The open lap-style D tuning DVD is going to be taught by me, Doug Cox. The style will be blues-based with some focus on more of a fingerpic...

Open D tuning instructions

I just got an email from Doug Cox at http://www.learnrootsmusic.com/. He is working on a new instructional DVD in open D tuning, and asked what people would like to see in the way of lessons.

Anything in particular anyone is interested in?

I am new at all this and would like to ask a question. Why would you want to lighten a bar? Everything I have read seems to indicate that heavier bars produce better tone.

Just curious, what string gauges do you use for your C tuning?

Thanks for the info on C tuning. I am just getting started, and fully intend to try the lessons out as written, not just seeing what works with D. So for all I know I will end up liking C better also. I have just read so many people saying how nice it is to have a "1" on the skinny string,...

So I ordered a copy of the DvD on Saturday. On Sunday I got an Email from Doug Cox, asking where I heard about the company and the lessons. I explained to him about Rob's forum, and mentioned that several of us were leaning open D Weissneborn, but got this DvD even though it was in a different tunin...

I saw a link to this Friday on Rob's site. Ordered it on Saturday. Looks really nice, but I was going to wait to see for sure before I recommended it. Not nearly enough non-bluegrass accoustic steel stuff out there. The clip really looks encouraging.

I agree with Bill. With the retail price so low, why buy second hand?

Where is the incentive for people to take the time and effort to come up with great teaching material, if people end up passing it around from person to person, instead of supporting the person who originally wrote the material?

Not sure what you guys mean by "minimalist." I have the Kelly Joe Phelps instructional DVD. Ok, I know it isn't a dobro, but he plays lap style in open D, just his voice and the guitar, and it sounds great to me.

I posted the link on another site to share the music and was reprimanded for violating copyright laws. Actually that is overstating it a little. But I was told that the site was violating the copyright laws. So, I removed the link and the whole thread disappeared. :>)<font size="1" color=&...

I have a question about the Scheerhorn. I just watched an instructional video that used one. From the looks of it, the front and back section are kind of rounded, and slanted. Doesn't this make the bar harder to grip when doing slants, especially reverse slants. At first I didn't think this would be...

Not to hijack the thread, but how about on a resophonic? I read some place that C6 wasn't suitable, but it wasn't clear if it was just because the guy didn't want to buy a new set of strings or not.

Really old dobro recordings

I have been gathering all kinds of information on Dobros, trying to decide if I should make the leap. One of the recent tapes I got talked a little about the history. I was surprised to here that the Dobro did not originate as a bluegrass instrument. Apparently it was designed to allow a guitar to b...

I was wandering around the web, and happened upon the Folk of the Wood site, and saw a post to Mickey about 8 string Dobros. In his reply he quoted a response he once got from Paul Beard -- he said -- Here's what Paul Beard had once written to me on the 8-String and the 7-String: Just for your info,...

Music theory

There are many arrangment tabs available for all differnt styles of music, but I was wondering if anyone knew of any books or other resources, short of enrolling in college, to help come up with arrangements, when you have a given melody to start with? Or is this just a natural ability your develope...

Reso maint

Just a quick question. I have recently seen some nice comments about the Beard Goldtone. Along with these comments was the recommendation to have it set up by the Beard shop. This leads me to believe that there are some critical steps in the assembly. Then I started to wonder, how much if any mainte...

Yes, but if you find them on ebay make sure you check the price. I have seen many of the Homespun instruction tapes on ebay for as much or more than they cost, new.
