New to Steel Guitar Forum

Post by Rob Anderlik »

This is my first post to the Steel Guitar Forum. I have been a lurker here from time to time; always impressed with the wide variety of interests and styles and especially so by the culture of the participants here.

Anyway I play dobro, Weissenborn guitars and to a lesser degree lap steel. I have been playing for longer than I would like to admit and I am just now getting around to writing some of my own tunes.

I look forward to exchanging information and ideas with y'all

Regards,
RobA

Hi Rob, what a pleasent surprise to see you here! Image

For those of you who don't know Rob, check his website, one of the most informative resources for acoustic lapstyle players I know of.

Hey Rob, welcome to the forum.
I'm glad that you joined so i could get the chance to thank you personally for all the help your site has given me. I've been playing lots of acoustic lap steel (read: can't afford a dobro right now!) and all the lessons and info on your site have been a great resource. So thanks a lot for putting that out there on the web for all of us.

Welcome Rob!

Hey... you are in Illinois. Why not stop by the HSGA Joliet Convention this October. You'll have a blast, make new friends, meet all the forumites who hang out here and improve your steel playing by 500%.

This year's guest of honor is legendary Hawaiian steeler Dick Sanft. Forumite and steel legend Jody Carver will also be in attendance on and off the stage.

Gerald:

I don't know anything about this but I am interested to learn more! Would a dobro/Weissenborn guy be welcome at this event? Are there jam sessions? What kind of activities are included?

Regards,
Rob

A Dobro Weisenborn guy is more than welcome!

Any type lap steel is welcome. Jam sessions are nightly and last till about 3-4 AM. Lots of food, drink and laughs at these informal get-togethers. Hawaiian, Country, Blues, Swing etc all played at the jams.

Go to the HSGA site and look at pictures of the last few conventions.

You'll have the time of your life. I guarantee!

Welcome Rob, and many thanks for all the help I've gotten from your website! I'm a Swede living in the UK, and I got hooked on acoustic lap steel this year (after getting my first electric lap steel last autumn), and I don't know anyone who plays acoustic lap steel over here, so finding your website (through this great forum) was a revelation.

I just got a second acoustic steel (Oahu squareneck) that I will tune GBDGBD, so I shall start checking out your Dobro material shortly! Image

Thanks very much for sharing your knowledge so generously!

Fred.

Gerald-Thanks for the info on HSGA.

If Jody Carver will be at Joliet, I might try to get down there just to meet him in person.

I always hated going around Chicago's congestion but am sorry I didn't go a few years ago when Alvino Rey was there, but I heard about it AFTER he was there in the report on the convention.

Thanks for letting us know ahead of time about who will be there. Will LT. Zinn be there too?...thanks....al Image

Rob,
You will not be the only Dobro player at the convention. I just wanted to let you know that so that you would not anticipate feeling all alone with your Dobro. Image

Al,
LT is at every HSGA convention on the Mainland and some in Hawaii. He has to be there to play rhythm guitar. (He good at this too) And remember to bring YOUR steel.

Welcome Rob.
and I don't know anyone who plays acoustic lap steel over here
Don't take that to mean there aren't any players here
there are MANY...
for instance, Martin Wheatley, probably one of the top 5 Tricone players in the world. http://www.hulabluebirds.co.uk/

And then there's this .. Hula Blues

Rob, glad to see you've joined up here at the Steel Guitar Forum. Some great folks, and a bit of a different perspective from the reso websites where we run in to each other.

Rob has done a great service for us players with his website. If you haven't checked it out yet, hustle on over there, you will really enjoy it!
