ZB Custom Student Value

All, I'm looking for a ballpark retail and craigslist value for an old Steel I'm looking to sell. It's been sitting under my pool table since I bought a new Williams years ago. It was a great guitar for me to learn on. I hope someone else can put it to good use. ZB Custom Student Model S-10. Serial ...

Herb, what you describe is how I've been doing it. Sorry if this wasn't clear. It works fine for "Swinging Doors" where I don't have to keep pickin and blockin' the 1st & 5th string simultaneously. It's also on a half stop and I'm having trouble getting the right pitch consistantly. If...

Mooney Licks on an E9

I've been copping licks off the 60's Haggard albums. I keep running across licks that use the flat 7 while rocking the A pedal. I can approximate them in the A+B position with a half stop raise on the first string. This works OK for most, but for something like the "Life In Prison" intro, ...

David, You are greatly overestimating how hard it is to recognize intervals (in any key) in standard notation. As Randy Beavers mentioned, it's not hard if you know where the root note is. I learned this from a theory workbook my piano teacher made me study (probably in 3rd grade). If you know how t...

Right Hand Technique. If you don't have someone who can show you how to work your right hand properly, get Jeff Newman's "Right Hand Alpha" DVD. I'd been playing for about 6 months when I got the DVD and my tone was much improved (many times over) within 30 minutes. After about 2 weeks man...

I bought a ZB Custom Student steel with 3 pedals and 1 lever off of ebay. It needed work, but I wasn't about to spend $1000+ on something I knew nothing about. I taught myself with Winnie Winston's book. I started looking for folks to play with after about 4 months (practicing about an hour a day). ...

Charles, The answer to your question is "it depends". It looks like you're at the point where you need to learn your modes and when to use them. A quick search of threads past should give you a few explanations. Otherwise, get yourself a book on basic jazz theory. Without knowing anything ...

I spent some time this weekend exploring what the heck to do with my right knee levers and came up with the following. Drop the 2nd string to D and you have a minor triad with the 1st ,2nd and 5th strings. Drop the 2nd string to C# and you can release it to "roll up" to the major 3rd like ...

I did a quick search on The Shed Keys and didn't find anything. When do you guys play? Sounds like cool stuff. I'm pretty new to the steel, but I'm getting a lot of milage from raising and lowering the E's. Raise the E's to F and hit the A pedal and you've got a major chord 3 frets up from the open ...

Bob, I'm not sure what you're looking for. Are you having trouble constructing basic chord melodies, or do you not like what you come up with? If you can play the melody, and can play major and minor chords around the neck (and can name what note is the highest in any particular chord inversion), co...

Yup. I saw that thread, but it wasn't really what I was looking for. I know the basic ii, iii & vi minor chords and can make the changes around the neck just fine. I'm looking for more info on connecting them musically, adding some fills or whatever. There's already 2 guitars, so just playing th...

playing in minor keys

Hey all, I'm pretty green on the steel (been playing about 7 months) but have started looking for projects to play with. I found a guy who could use some steel. He dropped off a CD of his songs and, sure enough, most of the tunes are in minor keys. The licks I've been picking up off of old Honkytonk...

Thanks all. I'm well aware of Ricky and Rebel's site, it's been a great help getting me started picking up intro's. I'm more interested in learning how to back up a singer right now. Charley Pride - In Person (Panther Hall) sounds like just what I'm looking for; unfortunately it's out of print. I'll...

Look for a Fender Lead II (made in the early 80's). They can be had for under $400. Strat style body, just a little smaller. Not quite the strat tone, but it's a well built guitar (American Made) with no extra cost for snob appeal. I've had one for about 20 years, and it was my main axe for 15. I ha...

Hey all, New steeler here (6 mos). I'm starting to get a handle on the fretboard/pedals and can actually make this thing sound ok now and then (sometimes). I'm looking for recommendations for songs or albums that would give me a good base of fills and background playing so I can start playing with o...

I did a gig on 6 string in 5 degrees F. I left the guitar in it's case overnight in my trunk to slowly acclimate to the new temperature. Once it was cold, the tuning held up pretty well. The only thing that really caused problems is having your fingers directly contact freezing cold metal (unavoidab...

Steve, I respect your opinion. I'm just calling things as I saw them. I started playing the 6 string in the mid 80's. I spent most of the rest of that decade trying to emulate the shredders of the era. Looking back, I view the time spent working on my chops as a huge waste of time. The time spent on...

I'm just out of my 20's but I spent many hours in my formative years trying to be Eddie Van Halen, Satriani et al. THe problem with that era is that many confused musicianship with playing fast. Rock music was never about "musicianship" (for the most part) until Van Halen broke out. If yo...

3Now4 - Time Ebbing

It's more of a jazz based sound, but there's some serious New Orleans funk going on throughout. Both 3Now4 releases are outstanding if you like groove/improv based jazz.

Dave Easley on Steel. It's only a 4 piece combo, so he gets plenty of room.

Bent up my ZB

Hey ZB knowledgable folks, I was changing the 3rd string on my ZB, and it flew off as I was tightening it up. When I looked, the string hadn't broke and the pin the ball end of the string fits over was bent up. It looks like the ball end of the string was on the end of the post and it bent it up whi...
