That's a looker... :)

Had my 8-string birch McKenna since July last year, and it's one of the most inspiring instruments I own. IMO in this price range, nothing else comes close.

+1 on the Vox DA-5. It's a modeling amp, similar approach to the Roland MicroCube but with better sounding tonal options IMO.

(Try one out if you can-- you might want a bigger speaker for those beefy Sierra tones.)

To my ear, the best 2-note substitute for a dominant ninth would be the b7 and the 9 intervals, i.e. for C9, play Bb and D as a major third interval-- in dobro tuning, find it on strings 6 and 5, or strings 3 and 2....look 2 frets down (or 10 frets up) from your C major chord. For a 2 notes to repre...

Nice article. Man, what a creative bass player. Equally great with the Burritos and on the '70s Ry Cooder stuff, but using a very different approach for each.

I played one at the Beard shop last year and liked it a lot-- balanced & full sound, very appealing acoustic tone. Don't think you'd be disappointed.

Hey Rick-- I like the look of that bar for dobro. Seems like you could tip the bar and get a nice sharp pull-off. True?

I have the Wallace TrueTone in mine, and like it better than the George L...not as dark, more "clear" in the bass end, and more versatile IMO-- well balanced between "vintage" and "modern" sounds. Not pricey, either. Having heard Dave Giegerich (who always sounded fanta...

James, I had them both at the same time a few years back-- I believe the BP had the "harder" coating. I remember the RR would shed red powder-- slowly, over time & in small amounts-- onto the fretboard. (Part of that I'm sure was my heavy left hand. Chuck offered re-coating for a small...

Plenty of love here, for music with that kind of soul. Now I'm gonna snap up a couple of Duke Levine CDs, which is what I should have done 4 yrs. ago when this beautiful tune was posted on the SGF the first time. Thanks for bringing it back! :D

Paul Beard's shop installed a Schertler Basik on my 8-string McKenna reso a few months ago. Sounds real good, no regrets at all.
