Any "older" newbies here?

First, thanks to everyone who responded to my question about playing and gigging (http://steelguitarforum.com/Forum15/HTML/012709.html) A follow-up question to that is, how many of you started steeling at a later age - say, 40 years old or older? (I'm just using 40 as a baseline - at 46, I don't con...

You can always tell a Texan...

...you just can't tell 'em much.

Apologies for dragging up an old thread but Billy's comment about "cell phones and amps" brings up a good point. That is, cell phones DO NOT play well with electronic equipment. Here's a video of a cell phone that is causing a Dell computer to go into a non-recoverable suspension mode (com...

My very first actual "paying" gig was with the MSA. I'd only had it a few weeks but apparently had gotten proficient enough with the I-IV-V changes that a local band asked me to sit in for a wedding party they were playing. I brought along my Fender Rhodes EP and after the gig, they invite...

b0b,

My bad. I didn't realize I'd posted this in the "Pedal Steel" forum until after the thread started getting replies. My apologies.

(On the other hand, I'm encouraged by the number of replies I've gotten from non-gigging players.)

Farris, I'll try not to be too long winded too... :-) Been playing keyboards (piano, synth, organ) for 42 years. Grew up playing in church. From '80 - '86 played full time as a sideman - based out of Nashville. Walked away from it and moved back to Dallas get a "real" job. Now at the age o...

Who plays but doesn't gig?

I've been lurking in this forum for a couple of years and am in awe of the talent and big names that are represented here. In To be honest, it's intimidating for a total PSG neophyte such as myself. Are there regulars in this forum who play but only as a hobby and only in the privacy of their own ho...

Winnie Winston's book - for basic E9th?

First, thanks to everyone who's been responding to my earlier thread "What's the first thing to learn as a new player?" The feedback I've gotten has been very helpful - along with all the other threads I've been able to dig using the forum's "search" function. One more question: ...

Dave,

"Horizontal and vertical..."

Correct me if I'm wrong (which may be likely)...

Vertical meaning moving from string to string and Horizontal meaning staying on 1 particular string. Correct? Or am I misinterpreting?

What's the first thing to learn as a new player?

Knock on wood, my CS will be here next week. Since it's been over 25 years since I touched a steel (and I wasn't really any good then), I'm pretty much starting totally over - and I want to do it right this time. I'm looking for a good instructional book and I'm planning to take lessons once I deter...

Doh!

I looked right at that page and it apparently didn't register with me. Thanks for the "slap upside the head" (and the info about the triple/double raise/lower).

I promise to do better due dilligence before posting additional questions. :-)

cheers!

What is "All-pull" and "triple raise..."

Two questions: 1. What is the diffence between an "all pull" and "push-pull" mechanism? Which one is generally considered better? 2. What is meant by "triple raise/triple lower"? (Ok, that's actually three questions.) I've been doing searches on the forum and on the &qu...

Tim, I hear ya'! I'm 44 and have no desire to get back into gigging (I have a GREAT day job). I'm looking for something that will get me away from the computer screen on those days when it's too wet or hot to ride my Harley. I've been lurking on this forum for awhile and finally decided that the cam...

Joey, I've heard good things regarding BJS bars from other as well. I checked out their website and I do see a 7/8" bar for 10-string. However, it doesn't list the weight. I'm also probably going to order up the Carter Start beginner pack-2 which includes a bar. I have a message into Ann to fin...

bar weight for a beginner?

I'm getting ready to order a Carter Starter and I need to order a bar to go with it. I'm looking at an Ernie Ball 3 7/8" bar - available in "medium" or "heavy" weight. My question: FOr a beginning E9 player, which weight bar would be the best choice - medium or heavy? Thanks...
