I did as you suggested and did a restore of the day before I did the Java update and now all works perfectly. That update notice could have been located in the tray I'm not sure, but I do know I didn't click on that reminder message. I went to the Java website and downloaded an update from there. I ...

I can't remember the exact type of Java update notice I received, but the notice was located in the lower right of the Firefox 7.0.1 browser.

java update - double click inoperative

I got a message that Java needed to be updated. I'm not even sure why I need this, but after updating I can't open (icons) with a double click as before. They will all open OK with a right click on the icon and single left click on "open". I removed Java and it is still the same. I'm using...

Must press F1 to boot

On a 5 year old Dell going to bios I have configured the hard drive to be first, cdrom second, and disabled 3 and 4th choices. The box shows a floppy drive at the top of this configuration area but doesn't allow me to do anything like choose or disable. This computer doesn't have a floppy drive. Whe...

Hi everyone! Cal I did put the old HD in the newer comp but the windows logo would just show for a second.........then reboot repeating this over and over. I loaded windows into another small blank HD then slaved the old HD and it booted up just fine. Some programs like Band in a Box and some others...

Hey Cal thanks for the quick return!! I do understand I will have to reload the office suite, but I'm having trouble understanding why. All I left behind when switching was: ram - which is volatile bios - I don't think anything is in there that I'd need CPU - that doesn't retain anything (I don't th...

Lost programs with harddrive change

Computer #1 had many programs loaded into it including Word, Excel, Access, BB, etc. and it worked fine. But because it was 8 years old I took the HD out of Comp #1 and put it in newer computer #2. On comp 2 it shows as a second (slave) drive e: I created a new icon for BB and it works fine. The pro...

OK Fellas......thanks for the information. Now for the whole story. I installed a new HD and (mostly) followed a magazine article on how to make partitions using fdisk. I must have missed the part about making a 2nd partition because when I got done there wasn't any. Now I know the importance of it ...

Thanks Jack!

The book that came with it makes partitioning sound like the only way to go when setting up a new disk. They say faster, neater, saves space, gives you more room, etc.

Do you "power" users make lots of different partitions?

If the HD is big enough is it really needed?

I agree with Gary. Do a backup soon a possible. My recent slowdown problem was a failing HD. I thought that was the problems so I backed up everything I wanted to save. That session was the last time I was able to open windows.
