I am preety new to the steel but I don't see anything wrong with tablature if used the right way. Of course I learned to play guitar before I even knew what tablature was. Guitar tab never helped further my guitar skills thats for sure. I'd rather just pick out leads by ear. That being said, I have ...

Scott, I am highly impressed with the Linemen! You my man, are the kind of steel player I'd like to become. It's funny but if you go to our myspace we list the same influences and sounds like. I noticed you guys listed Whiskeytown. Our bass player played bass for whiskeytown. We actually practice in...

Larry, Thanks for the replies. b0b, that scale was very helpful it puts the X lever in perspective for me. I am already working out a few phrases. However I don't see myself ever using this lever unles i'm already in the AB position or A or B position. Using it in an open position feels really awkwa...

BTW Larry, I just wanted you to know that Im crazy about the version of Alison you recorded. It is one of the top played tunes on my ipod. Being a white knuckle flyer, it is my song of choice during those dreaded takeoffs. Thank you for that.

Vertical Knee Licks

Will someone please post or e-mail me a few licks (with a little context) using the VK. My carter has one but I've never attempted to use it. I don't really know what it does.

Two years later...

I’ve been officially playing my pedal steel now for two years. I have worked hard and feel pretty comfortable behind it. First the good news: I know where all the major variations are open and with A&B. I know my A&F positions and my D lever positions. My picking and technique are both relat...

Henry, yes it's for a fan tribute. Not a local thing but multi-national. People are submitting things from all over the world. It is sponsored through their website. We are very excited to have been chosen. The problem now is we have to decide which track to use. Good problem to have I guess.

First studio project... I'm still shaking

I just completed my first studio project. When I started playing steel back in september I never thought I would have pulled it off. Thanks everyone here for your E-mail suggestions on the song. Here it is.. a little out of tune but hopefully a beginning of better things to come. http://www.gtsweb.c...

I love my Peterson V-SAM Virtual Strobe tuner. It has pedal steel settings built in, including Newman's tuning. It's amazing, you just plug it in and tune, including all pedals and knee levers. It has a pass through jack, a pedal steel mount and a back lit display so you can see it during a gig.

Todd, No doubt nothing is more boring than playing scales but there is a saving grace.. Backing tracks. Band in a Box is an excellent tool to play to. I have songs in just about every key. I include all the chords in a key (including relative minors) and practice my scales over that. The one techniq...

The sound you hear on Sweethearts is Lloyd Green and Jay Dee Maness. I'm by no means am trying to be pretentious, but those two could play just about any guitar and they would have that "sound". So my point is it really is not the guitar you are hearing, it's the player. On another note. M...

My advice is to quit learning licks and learn your scales. All of the licks you are "learning" are made up of scales. Learn them forwards, backwards and upside down and I promise it will change your pedal steel life. A week with Jeff Newman hammering this home was worth 10 years of licks fo...

Unfortunatly Dick Meis is going out of twn and cant help. I have been asked to replace a simple fiddle part with steel for a recording session. Low profile Volume pedal made me better

Short of spending a week with Jeff Newman, switching to a low profile volume pedal has made the single most improvement in my playing. It's difficult for me to explain except to say I'm not cheating on my picking and my control is 10 times better. I love it when I get better... It's like leap year, ...

Hello Everyone

I'm new to the pedal steel forum and for that matter, the pedal steel. The ol' B-Bender just could not satisfy me anymore. I am one of the lucky ones.. I've got a great teacher here in Carrollton, Mr. Charlie Vaughn. I figure since I am only thirty that I will have this thing whooped by the time I c...
