I never gave any thought to watching the awards. Instead I spent my time watching San Antonio beat the daylights out of Dallas. Now that's entertainment. I just showed up here today because it's a Steel Guitar Forum tradition to sit around and gripe about the awards shows. And every once in a while ...

"The album with Bloody Mary Morning..."

I'm pretty sure the original recording of that was on Phases and Stages, and that would be John Hughey on steel.

John, my wife and I took our vacation two years ago up in Toronto. I happened to catch a documentary type show on Breau when I was up there. I wouldn't be surprised if it was the same one you've seen. It was a good documentary, but a very sad story.

I don't know about Willie's best steel album, but my favorite steel moment on Willie's records is on Phases And Stages. John Hughey takes a really outside ride on "Sister's Coming Home/Down At The Corner Beer Joint". Hughey's solo is loose and cool, but the real treat is that he's playing ...

Steely Dan has always provoked very polarized reactions toward their music.

One thing I've always liked about them is that they always did what they wanted and basically told the music business suits to take a hike. One of the same reasons I like Merle Haggard.

Is there any chance that Buddy Charlton will be coming down to play with Bill Kirchen's band?

Steely Dan; valium? prozac? I'd think qualudes would be more on the mark. Sort of like smearing vasaline on your glasses and walking on a matress -- but with a killer groove.
[This message was edited by Dennis Scoville on 02 March 2001 at 09:34 A...

Did anybody catch the recent live performance Steely Dan did for the PBS fundraiser? They played a bunch of songs from the latest album, and played several old songs with new arrangements.

It was killer. With grooves like that I reckon I can tolerate the smugness, smartness and whiteness.

Martin, Nope, not before a gig. Although it might be interesting to try sometime. I try to get in two twenty minute sessions a day, when possible. One in the morning, and one after work. After you do it for a while you develop a skill for clearing your mind and focusing on one thing -- and this can ...

Bob & Martin, One thing I've found to help me get into that musical place we're talking about is meditation. Regular meditation can provide some real skills in being able clear your mind of things that can get between you and the music. I'm not much for hocus-pocus or California-style pop psycho...

When playing on stage have any of you guys ever "got lost" in a song? I don't mean losing your place in the music, but rather getting so far into the song, the band, and the steel, that you sort lose yourself. For me those are the best moments.

Is the Opry doomed? Of course, we all are. Any Hemingway fans out there?

"...all stories, if continued far enough, end in death, and he is no true-story teller who would keep that from you."

But as lives go the Opry's had a great ride.

Anybody remember Mason Williams? He wrote a song about a guy who was a really great dancer. The guy was very sad because he couldn't find a dance partner that could keep up with him. Finally he met this woman who could match him out on the dance floor. At the end of the song Mason Williams revealed ...

Herb mentioned the following: "One thing that didn't get mentioned as to why it was easier for an artist to become "successful," whatever that means is this: when I started listening to radio back in the mid-50's, playlists were 100 songs (remember the "hot 100?") and DJ's h...

$299 to $199...? I paid $149 for mine, the MPX100 model had only been out for a short time. Guess that's what happens when you make something that becomes popular.

It's a lot of bang, especially for the buck. A couple of years back I think I was maybe the second or third steel player on the forum who got one. I think a lot of guys on the forum had a hard time believing some of the positive comments those early owners were making. They had an even harder time b...

Anybody try a Peavey Classic 50?

Just wondered if anybody's every tried a Peavey Classic 50 amp (either 2 12's, or 4 10's) for pedal steel?

I searched a ways back in the Electronics file and didn't see any mention of these. Could this be an idea that's not even worth looking into?

Bill,

You also want to make sure that none of your guitar cords are near the Profex transformer. The cords will suck up that noise and feed it right to your amp. -Dennis
