It’s like Buck Owens said, “Radio is in the advertising business not the music business!”. Advertisers want cheerful musak background, not heart-wrenching emotional music that will take attention away from cheerful commercials aimed at the 18 to 30 year old crowd. That's why I don't listen to commer...

Not only did Johnny Paycheck have one of the best country voices going, but the level his intuitive musical sensibilities of feel and time were right off of the Richter scale.

My Sax heros

If I took up sax, I would want to sound like David (Fathead) Newman or Julian (Cannonball) Adderley. That would pretty much do it for me! 8-)

The Erhu, a Chinese Violin, is had to play because there is no fret board. You have to touch the strings with a very light touch. also the bow goes between the two strings, which are tuned a fifth apart. However, when mastered is very expressive and voice like.

Coincidently, I'm going to Costco tomorrow to buy hearing aids. I am tired of not being able to hear, especially at the live theatre that I go to a lot. I also have tinnitus. If only I was smarter and more informed when I was younger, my hearing would be better today. I don't play a lot of bars anym...

On of the licks that does it for me is the intro to a George Jones song(written by Dallas Frazier) called When Love Was Green.
I think the Steel player was Weldon Merrick.

Also, I recall the Bud Issac intro lick to Slowly, sung by Webb Pearce.

Back in the sixties, there was a group called the Hillsiders. I heard them at the Edison Tavern in Toronto. One of the guys had a wooden body dobro with a fivestring neck. He played scruggs style and got a wonderful sound.

Duke was successful before Billy Strayhorn, but even more so, after Billy joined the group.

I think I read somewhere that bebop came about at jam sessions where less advanced musicians, who hadn’t done their homework, would sit in, not play very well and take several choruses to prove it. The more advanced musicians would write songs laced with two five one changes and altered chords to sc...

They probably changed the melody so they wouldn't have to pay royalties. I was asked to write an instrumental for a commercial one time. It had to sound like a well-known Hawaiian song, but original for that reason.
