Is anyone involved in playing music in other than what might be called "normal" venues? For the last year or two I've been playing with the Shriner's "Hillbillie Unit" which has been a total blast. We have an old school bus which is painted a faux wood grain and is very rustic to say the least. We dress in overalls and do various parades throughout the area with the other units as well as some nursing homes and fund raisers. All in all, these boys are a lot of fun to pick with. Everyone makes mistakes but they're all overlooked. I've had a ball with this unit, we even got flashed by a couple of young ladies in the Oceanview (Norfolk) St. Patrick's Day Parade. Our hillbillie vehicles would make Jed Clampett proud. We even have a 1929 Cadillac touring car which runs great. Here are some shots my wife took on Memorial Day at the parade in Portsmouth, Va......Let's see some of yours........JH in Va.

Those vehicles are too cool for words. I love the way the sides are cut out of the bus. I suspect you guys are perfect for fundraisers. I envy all of you. |

Here's a shot of the "Hillbillies" at one of the functions in the Khedive Shrine Temple ballroom a month or two back. We do about five of these a year and they're always on a Sunday afternoon so they don't conflict with my regular band gigs. The leader of the group is the bass player (Charlie Amick) who has that 1960 red Epiphone F-hole bass, I'd love to own that thing. Ol' Charlie's eighty years old and still goin' strong!...JH in Va.
