That would be terrific, Fred... Anything you think would be appropriate for a tribute article. Hopefully, something where he isn't too much in the background.
Many thanks,
John

Thanks for passing this along... I'd like to do a tribute to Ernie in the next issue of the Hawaiian Steel Guitar Association newsletter. Frederic, do you happen to have a high resolution version of the photo you posted here of Ernie and Helen? That would be perfect for the article... Don, do you ha...

Way Down Texas Way...
One of my students, Bob Austin, told me about the discussion so I thought I'd chime in and clear things up. I'm flattered that there is still interest in the work we did 25 years ago! The original track was cut on my D-12 Emmons. It was early in my stint with the band and I was just beginning to acq...

Hi-rez Alkire E-Harp photos, anyone?
Hello All, Paul Warnik is doing an awesome feature on E-Harps for the HSGA Winter 2012 newsletter and we could really use some high quality photos of classic E-Harp models: Especially the original Epiphone model and some of the early Valco models. But we could probably use any good photos that are o...

David's tuning on How D'Ya Do...
Hello, Mike. I did not see the photos you cite. Very interesting, by the way! My opinion is based on what I hear. I know the sound of the G13th tuning. Listen to the clip at 1:43. It's a strum using all but the 2nd string of this tuning. I used to think David did it by adding a high G# to a standard...

David's tuning on How D'Ya Do...
Kevin, I'm pretty sure David is using his G13th for all but the percussive little chord solo part using low bass strings (E13th). You get to David's G13th from a basic 6-string C6th by lowering the bottom 3 strings: CEGACE ==> BDFACE The bottom 5 strings are just a B11 minus the root and transposed ...

Fender Stringmaster Photos requested...
Hello All, John Ely here... Paul Warnik is doing a feature on Fender Stringmasters in the upcoming Hawaiian Steel Guitar Association newsletter. He's done it up right, but we need some high resolution photos of different Stringmaster models. Can anyone out there help? I'm at johnely@hawaiiansteel.co...

Skype Steel Lessons Offered
After a year of doing these, I can say with confidence that this is great medium for learning steel guitar. If you have a decent broadband connection it even works well for rank beginners where you have to really focus on the details of hand positioning and basic picking/blocking technique. I cover ...

All,
This is for an upcoming story in the HSGA Quarterly by Paul Warnik. The spring issue will feature the Console Grande and we're hoping to get a couple quality photos.
Thanks much in advance!

Hello, Mitch... John Ely here. Amazing shot of Little Roy Wiggins with Eddy Arnold. Do you by chance have a high-rez version I could use for a history piece I'm doing in the Hawaiian Steel Guitar Association newsletter?
I love it!
Thanks for your time, Mitch

Thanks, everyone, for the great comments and suggestions. I can't tell you how helpful it is to get feedback, positive and negative. I've tried to address the problem AJ had recognizing the results as Tab vs. Fretboard Diagrams. Now the user chooses which method to use. Hopefully the Tab notation lo...

I always play my most frequently used tuning on the far neck furthest away from me. This is appears to be contrary to most players. I do it because of the way I play harmonics and special strumming effects. If there's another neck in front of my right hand, I can get hung up if my fingers bang again...

All, I'll vouch for the quality of Magnatone's higher-end steel guitars. My Waikiki workhorse is the longscale D-8 Keoki mentioned above. The story I heard was that Magnatone gave away a bunch of these instruments to the more prominent players in an attempt to cut into Fender and Rickenbacker's stra...

Bill, Ricky, and all The Deluxe is overall my favorite amp of all time. I've used it on most recordings, and here in Hawaii, it would be a fantastic live amp since most of the music here is low-volume with no drums. The only problem is they go for around $1500 here! My '63 Vibroverb Reissue works gr...

Hill, Your question often comes up when discussing steel tunings or chord theory in general. The root note of a chord is surprisingly unimportant to the overall sound of a chord. This is because, almost always, the bass and rhythm guitar will define the chord root, leaving the important color tones ...
