I think you'll find that a Princeton is often underpowered for band rehearsals (especially with drums) but 100% useable for home practice. If you have a serious PA to lean on it could work for live shows but most of us would find it less than ideal for steel. Might just be my all time favourite guit...

3&4 is a great place to start as it will cover basically any learning material you’re going to find and it could be all you ever need (I only added a 5th lever after 20 years and could easily live without it) My advice would be to try and find a well maintained used pro steel from a reputable se...

I find it really important to stress to US vendors how to fill out customs forms as Americans typically aren't used to paying customs charges of the scale that most other countries charge so they understandably don't know the implications of an incorrectly filled out form... In Canada I once sent a ...

Something I've found on both of my steels is that with the pull set up for G, I'm not able to tune it to get to G#, but if I set it up for G#, I am able to get it tuned to only raise as far as G. I generally prefer the unison change but do occasionally want the F# > G change and can just retune the ...

Sorry to hear you're having these issues Mike - my experience has been quite positive overall. I love the blue mica on your guitar :) The only small issue I had was noticing a few minor squeaks that I didn't expect in a brand new guitar where I suppose things may have been under-lubricated at the fa...

You could likely find a single neck 3&4 EMCI near the bottom of your budget and it would be a great guitar to grow with - I played one for around 20 years, it sounds great, plays really well, is relatively light and is very easy to work on/change around while learning about all-pull mechanics. I...

Yah brushed aluminium neck would be a hot look! Then we'd have to wade into the wood neck vs aluminium neck discussions though

That is one seriously cool looking steel, apart from the "decorative" strip on the body edges and the neck. Would look sooo much better without them. And what about losing the mica altogether? A satiny oil & wax finish on plain maple would be even cooler. Luckily I don't need one – bu...

Stew, Thank you for the great photos and review. Very interested to hear your feedback after the gig. Re scale length: other Excels seem to be 24.25 inches, slightly longer than many older PSGs. How long is the Robostar? Cheers, John It’s 24 1/8 according to Mitsuo, so a ‘normal’ scale length but I...

I see one price specified but two different guitars. One has 3 floor pedals and one has 5 floor pedals. $2980 is the base price I was quoted for a 3+5 in black, and since I didn’t need additional pedals or levers I didn’t ask how much they would be… Pad, volume/tone controls and other colours are a...

Which books to follow Scotty's?

Does anyone have a good recommendation for a book that picks up where Dewitt Scott's Mel Bay books end off? Hey all - I'm a professional mixing engineer who previously spent a good 10 years as a pro steel player and would happily elevate your steel-centric recordings with a great mix, for faaaar less than I would charge a label for a more pop/folk/rock type of project :) Feel free to drop me a line, or ch...
