I play mainly in “post-punk” or other noisy rock contexts. I often feel overdrives or more mild distortions aren’t really as useful as fuzz or more extreme distortions for steel. I am quite fond of octave fuzzes. Bob Hoffnar mentioned difference tones and that’s a big reason I like octave fuzzes as ...

Protomartyr & Rider/Horse Bowery Ballroom NYC 6/15
Protomartyr & Rider/Horse Bowery Ballroom 6 Delancey St, New York, New York 10002 June 15, 2023 8:00 pm Protomartyr is touring in support of their new record which has plenty of steel on it courtesy of Bill Radcliffe. I am unsure if they are touring with a steel player, but I’m play steel in the...

I typically play E9 pedal steel, but my lap steel has been tuned very similarly to JAS for over a year now. I use an F instead of a low C. I like all the 6-string C6 literature being available for the top six strings and using the bottom two strings for expanded chord vocabulary. That low C does see...

Sorry if I caused alarm concerning Quilter. It was my favorite amp for live application and hopefully it’s just a fluke. I have tried using it with other speakers and still had the same issue so it’s not a blown speaker. Also the sound while it was connected was like a downward sawtooth tremolo chop...

Phantom power broke my Quilter? How to contact them?
My Quilter US block got fried back in August and I’ve used the contact form on their website and still haven’t heard back from them. I’ve played over 50 shows with that amp and enjoyed it while it worked. I’ll bring a small speaker cab and for the smallest rooms, just the speaker is plenty enough vo...

I have used a Quilter US Superblock for my last two dozen or so gigs and it’s been great. Steels are so heavy and space consuming, that I felt like I needed to downsize my amp. For most of the shows I just use the smallest speaker cabinet Orange sells (8 inch I think?) and it’s been loud enough to b...

Another thing to potentially consider is knob diameter. My Hudson seems to have a wider diameter than Fender stringmasters. I have another lap steel with tele knobs and even though it’s got the same pot and cap values the boo-wah technique is slightly less ergonomic. It’s a small difference, but not...

I use a 1M ohm liner pot and .05uf cap in my Hudson stringmaster and enjoy that pairing for boo wah. The larger pot value means you can go from the tone all the way rolled off to pretty open real quick. Tele’s are typically 250k ohm I think and I’ve seen some steel’s wired with that value too. When ...

I have been using the Mosky Spring Reverb. About $35 on Amazon and cheaper on eBay. Spring is its only trick (no hall, plate, etc) but it does it well. Can be heard on the most recent couple of tunes I posted. I was wondering about that pedal. Seems like it'd be a nice cheap option when playing thr...

So many cheap pedals have those tiny trimmer pots on them which I find near impossible to adjust with fingerpicks on. I have a couple Flamma brand pedals that I enjoy. The “normal” sized pedals are $75ish and the mini pedals are $30ish. Moen makes a couple cheap “Jimi” vibe pedals that are nice univ...

I am new to the Franklin pedal, but mine is next to the C pedal like your proposed copedent is. I really like being able to bend the 5th string from A to C# by rocking off one pedal to the other. Just realized putting the Franklin on the other side of the A pedal does the same, but let’s you do t...

My pedals are set up like Emmons, but I have a lever that lowers 2 a whole step and 8 a half step that I saw in Day’s copedent and I love it. My steel is an old Miller student model that came to me in rough shape and it just couldn’t handle the high E string lower. There are some “classic†l...

The brand name is Savannah. Today the price shot up to $99.99 I guess the people at Musician's Friend took another look at it. Musician’s Friend does a daily sale called “stupid deal of the day†where a different item each day has a big discount and the mandolin was the special that day. I wa...

I wonder how they get the spring inside such a small box? From my understanding this pedal is a clone of Malekko’s spring pedal and the Malekko spring pedal uses similar circuitry of the belton brick (three pt2399 delay chips). So no spring, but uses 3 short delays in tandem to create a spring li...
