For dobro/lap steel I've been using b0b's tuning lately. It's G-B-D-F#-A-D. It's a G over D tuning that offers some nice minor chords. I always felt limited by non-pedal steel guitars so it allows some more options. Try it out and see what you think!

Jimmie Hudson makes great steels to learn on. I started out on his six string model and it was a perfect transition instrument from guitar.

I use a freeloader with my tonemaster twin and it sounds incredible... Really sweetens the sound. I image the Black Box adds a little more warmth than the freeloader. Can't go wrong with either.
