I hope this guitar goes to someone who will play it, not just sit in a museum. What a beautiful instrument. Wood necks are relatively rare from that late in Bigsby production, I think? The pedals are probably as they were when it was "re-built" in 1961. And it looks very very clean. And th...

Nice use of open strings in your lines! And I like how you pickup the bar for some whole tone moves on the same string, so it doesn't always sound like a slide. Helps to break it up and make things sound a bit more in tune (IMO). Nice! One thing, the backing track is a little sad (or maybe it's just...

I have seen those clips countless times and seen that pic, but I never put it together. Ha. Sure looks like the same guitar to me? Regardless, the second pic is a Permanent. The fingertips have a bit more space between the bridge/changer and the endplate. The thumbscrew tuners on fingertips are moun...

Ray Price Sings Bob Wills is a great record! Jimmy does pay a lot of (great!) E9 on there. He does play C6 too though. Bubbles in My Beer is definitely C6:

If you search here on the forum, there are quite a few threads about Sho Buds, including some that are devoted to Sho Bud Permanents (1950's and 60's) and/or Fingertips (1960's). There is some good info archived here. Some cool pics too!

Late 50's 8 String Split E9 Copedent with E 1st string

I am just curious if anyone is using this copedent on an 8 string guitar? I am guessing that the Bud Isaacs copedent is more common (but still not "common" :D ). Anyway, I think that this is an interesting variant. I did see Chris Scruggs mention it at one point in a post. https://bb.steel...

Thanks for the responses everyone. I was just curious. I guess the close spacing was for a different reason. Btw, here is the clip that I was referring to. At about 2:08, Buddy plays the lick in question, using his right foot to quickly use the C pedal. Obviously there is no question that this passa...

Early Sho Bud Permanent Pedal Spacing

On early Sho Buds that have the smaller, closely spaced ABC pedals, it it possible/practical to press all three pedals at once with the left foot? I mean without contortions/putting your foot sideways etc. For a modern E9 copedent, this would not really matter, but maybe in the early days when the C...

I don’t know too much about slack key, but I wonder how old these slack key tunings variations are. Could a slack key armpit tuning like G Wahine have been the inspiration to lower the 3rd string A on the A major hawaiian guitar tuning to G# all those decades ago? I don't know too much about slack ...

I would venture to say that the roadmap to learning any music is fairly clear. The hardest part is sticking with it, because it can be quite frustrating at times! I do not say this as some kind of expert, but rather as someone who should really be taking my own advice here! Learning things by ear is...

There is nothing better than music-related intellectual curiosity. Yes! Tim, there are a lot of threads on Vance and his tunings on the forum. If you search, you'll find lots of great stuff. As for the lack of a middle E thing. Vance and an awful lot of other players had/have E13 in conjunction wit...

Hi Dave, I spent quite a bit of time with this tuning. In the end, I switched back to E13 but it sounds great and starts to seem less 'weird' after a while. I guess that's true of anything though really :D... I also used a couple of variations I spent a good bit of time with this: E C# G# E C# A# D#...

Some of Hank Thompson's stuff kind of falls in this category. Hank is generally sort of considered western swing it seems, but some (a lot?) of his music kind of blurs the lines between western swing and honky tonk. And the C6-ish playing on his records sounds like C6 and yet it isn't really 'jazzy'...

That is a great set! I would suggest tuning it to E13 and A6 (or C6 if you prefer and/or if you want to be more consistent with your 10 string pedal guitar). Or try both, A6 is an easy re-tune from C6. If you don't think you'll play it, then maybe let it go but if you think you'll ever get around to...

Ha!

Some clever, useful ideas in this thread. A downhill playing surface, I would have thought that one at least would be obvious to the show organizers, but I guess not!
