A possible tuning epiphany

I’ve tried all the sweeteners I can find and although I always like the sound when I play by myself It never sounds right when I play with others. So I always go back to “straight” tuning, or whatever you call it with a Peterson and no sweetener. The other day on a whim I just tuned by ear using the...

Another “Who’s the steel player”?

This one’s from those crazy South Park boys. Caution: some R-rated lyrics but the steeling is solid. I’m wondering who hooked up with them?

How important is pedal height to your playing?

A few years into learning this thing and it’s always my foot that’s my weakness. Sometimes I’m plagued by not getting a pedal all the way down so after a while I’ll adjust it higher to see if that helps which it might temporarily. Other times it’s the opposite and I don’t completely clea...

Thanks, all. Paul, that’s funny, I had just found that lesson right as you posted.

Growl may not be the best description but it is a single string thing. Here he is on a rocker:

Thanks guys, good info here as always. I have assumed that the starting place on the amp was a ton of bass but Tucker your advice is well taken. I’m trying that in my next jam. Of course I’ll never have Paul’s hands but we can still try our best. And I knew new strings would figure in. Ugh. Ti...

Paul F’s tone on low notes

It’s not necessarily specific to Paul but I hear it on many of his recordings. The low notes (E9 neck) have almost a trebly growl which sounds great. There’s no amount of amp tweaking I can do to even get a hint of that (NV112). So I’m forced to conclude it’s one of his boxes. Does anyone kn...

Another big thumbs up for recording yourself. I consider myself pretty sub-mediocre but every now and then when I listen to myself recorded I think “say, that sounds like a real steel”. That’s pretty fun.

My left foot

I’ve been at this thing for a couple of years now and it feels like my weak link, other than everything, is the left foot. I’m either accidentally leaving a bit of pressure on a pedal pulling a string sharp, or pressing A or B and leaking over to the other pedal a bit. Or not quite getting one a...
