Actually, this begs another question: Why do pedal steel guitars have the pickup crowding the bridge like that? Seems like tone would be better if it was moved further away. The strings barely vibrate that close to the bridge, so you need a very strong pickup, and hence more noise I would guess. Cur...

I am using the Egnator Rebel 20 amp, with 12' cabinet. I have other amps, but this one is nice for practice, since it's newer and I don't mind leaving it on for a long time. I see what you mean about the amp tone making a difference. Now maybe I see why I'd see so many steelers using those Peavey am...

Checking my post, after work today. I want to thank everyone for all the responses; it's greatly appreciated. This forum seems to be a pretty nice community. I can give some more background info, since that was suggested in order to be more helpful. I have played guitar full-time professionally some...

Not blaming the steel, rather just trying to feel my way around the instrument. How is that tone achieved? As a guitarist, I know every type guitar I play has a different sound, and many have quirks. I'd like to know what people do to get the sound they like, and what things matter, and make a diffe...

Getting tone I want - Newby question alert!!

Hi, I'm just a flat-out beginner, guitar player, semi-retired, loves pedal steel, gonna give it a shot. I have an MSA Classic S-10 from the 70's, works great, but I feel like it sounds a bit thin. I'd like to get that rich, full-body steel sound that I hear so often and love. I realize (as a guitari...

I tried it out, although it's pretty scratchy and needs some work. The volume is side to side, and kind of hard to get used to if you ask me. The wah is up/down, but it's not a great sounding wah. To me, the nasty, old-style fuzz tone is the most interesting, but I can't using it for steel. Probably...

Fender Pedal - ever seen one of these?

Came on to this pedal recently, never seen one before. Interesting. Very interesting old fuzz tone on it, has a wah wah, and a volume control w/side by side action. probably not especially useful for steel, but who knows...

I have an old Fender Super that sounds great with pedal steel. Also, I recently picked up a Lab Series L9, haven't really tried it much yet, but I'm wondering if anyone has tried one of those.

Thanks for the tips, Mike. I will try that. Truth is, I considered roughing up the shaft a little bit, but was reluctant to do that until consulting with some more experienced players. They levers have been slipping ever since I acquired the guitar, but it doesn't appear that anyone has ever tried t...

MSA S-10 knee levers move

I'm a beginner, trying to keep my 70's MSA knee levers from moving out of position every time I sit down to play. Whenever I use the levers, they seem to spin just a bit on the bar which they are clamped. I have loosened the clamps, cleaned the bar with alcohol to remove oils, etc. in case that was ...

Thank you all for the response, and the input. As happens, I did make the offer of $300 which was accepted. I've had a chance to demo the amp, and it sounds pretty darn good, notwithstanding a few crackles and pops. It needs some cleaning up and a good going-through, but everything works and the spe...

Should I buy this amp?

Been looking for something that might be suitable for playing out, just in case I ever get good enough playing steel. I play guitar, and I remember running across these Lab Series amps years ago. I thought they sounded pretty good for solid-state, plus this one has an original EV speaker, and there'...

Thanks for the input, all. Actually, I was planning to install a bypass, using a pull-switch volume pot replacement. The biggest complaint I have with the stock MSA pickup is noise. I was hoping to put a Lawrence PU in and see what it does.

Need instructions MSA pickup change

I have a mid-70's MSA S-10 Classic that I'd like to swap the pickup just to see how I like the sound. I'm relatively new to these instruments and could use some basic instruction/advice on best way to disassemble and install a the new pickup. I have very good guitar set-up and electronics skills. Th...

Kiesel Double Neck

Just spoke to a friend today who told me he'd pulled something out of a closet I might be interested in - a double-neck lap? steel with the Kiesel name on it. I haven't seen it yet, but sounds like may be dark brown bakelite. He says one neck is 8, other is 10 string. Does anyone know anything about...

You need to troubleshoot further. Did you attempt to plug anything else into the amp? Maybe a bare chord? Try the other channel? Thump it on top? Turn the volume up and down... any difference? Do you hear a hum? Does it get louder? Etc.

I install good spring tube retainers in Fender amps with inverted tubes - they're one helluva lot more reliable afterwards. And yeah... I vote for the Twin.
