Re: Is this normal behavior for an old tone pot?
...should I be thinking about replacing the pot? I have a 1949 Gibson Century 6 and the pots on that needed cleaning. Unlike the pots you usually see today there was no "window" by the terminals to spray in spray cleaner (DeOxit Red for cleaning, DeOxit Gold for conditioning). There are 4...

Is this normal behavior for an old tone pot?
Hi friends! The tone pot on my '49 Gibson BR-9 is acting a bit odd...I think! It seems to function perfectly well throughout its range. However...when I'm completely counter clockwise...and I mean nailed that direction...the tone seems to jump back to an area that sounds to me a little like about 1/...

(snip) I'm leaning toward the National though because the plectrum portion of the pick is shorter...helping to create a better sense of connectedness with the strings... much like the slick pick. It's quite common to file on the pick part... in fact, melt, bend, mutilate however you like, to get th...

Beginner Thumb Pick Recommendation!
Hey! I'm moving along with the beginning phase of the wonderful world of Lap Steel. I'm hoping I can get some good recommendations re a comfortable, usable thumb pick. I started out with a heavy large golden gate which felt really clunky. I've been trying a Propik, which is REALLY comfortable...and ...

THAT WAS AN AWESOME POST STEVE! Thanks so much! I'm going to pick up Doug's two song books for standard C6. Then...I'm going to play around with the E tuning variations that you shared. I can't believe I haven't discovered the lap steel thing until now. That BR-9 IS a little screamer! I have neen ru...

Re: About those tunings....................
So Ray... I get the C6 (C-E-G-A-C-E) and there seems to be LOTS of instructional stuff out there...but what's the C6/A7th tuning? And...is there specific instruction readily available for it? Thanks my friend! ---Jim This question arises about every 90 days here on the SGF and while legitimate.........

Re: Some Info
Thanks a lot Tom! James, First off welcome to the forum as well as the "brotherhood of steel". You sure are starting out with some fine instruments and I'm sure that you will find that there are many many tunings to experiment with but I do think C6th and going with Doug's books will be ve...

Beginner Advice Requested! Two Steels. One C6, the other...?
Hi! I'm a recent empty nester and have been playing guitar for over 40 years and have just starting exploring the wonderful world of lap steels. Over the course of the past couple months, I've been blessed to have acquired TWO steels...one you may have seen on these pages a few weeks ago is a longer...

Anyone know of a good steel teacher in Minnesota?
Hi all!
Im just starting out on lap steel and would really like to get with a good teacher so I can get a good start with all the proper techniques, etc. Been playing guitar forever and am somewhat of a theory geek...but I don't want to just dive in with bad technique.
Thanks!!

James, you made a good decision. I don't think you will be disappointed. One little thing that may be of help - it is rather easy to knock the tone control out of position when your picking hand is moving about. I took the knob off and placed a garden-hose rubber washer under it. Then I put a littl...

Re: Nice
James, Nice looking guitar and just by appearance is seems to have "mojo"! Just don't get frustrated, relax, enjoy and as a fellow "newbie" I welcome you. Tom PS: Once you start to get the hang of it I would strongly suggest getting Doug Beaumier's 25 C6th songs for Lap Steel. H...
