The problem with amplifying a dobro seems to be, very simplistically speaking, most pickups and transducers make the thing sound like a weird lap steel and not a reso; the sound of a resonator is a uniquely acoustic phenomenon best captured by a microphone. Volume and feedback are problems as well.

Danny Hawk came by with his Regal RD-45 that I had installed a Lace Resonator neckmount pickup. It of course sounded like a weird lap steel, but when played through the Match-Bro actually sounded like an amplified dobro and with no feedback. We played it loud and from all angles guitar v. amp.

I bought a very early Match-Bro from Buddy back in like 1993, and used it very little. Frankly, I was considering selling it recently since the sound with the steel never really *did* it for me. But with the reso it's a whole 'nuther thing. I got a Gold Tone mahogany recently and intend to put a pickup on it for incorporating it into my live performances. The Match-Bro is definitely going to be part of the setup.

I think Goodrich is no longer making these things. I also think Goodrich should make a stab at the resonator market out there. They may not be aware of the potential.

I've read here that Goodrich is planning on re-issuing something--Matchbro, Superbro, whatever.
Yes--I've heard it used as you describe and although I chuckle at the irony, it really does overcome those exact problems--feedback and weird lapsteel characteristics.
I remain totally impressed by the standard pedal steel into Matchbro usage--I'm still learning and getting better at bring out the reso qualities in my playing when I use it. To me, this is one of the great inventions of the last two or three hundred years, give or take.

I had a Match Bro 2 that I used with the
Marrs Cat-Can, & that was a great combination also.

Gary Morse used a Match-Bro on a Dobro with a magnetic pickup to get the authentic sound at high volume, when he was on the road with Dwight Yoakam.

Could someone post a pic of a Matchbro, and/or give a good description of one?

Man, I was HOPING someone would try this and report on it. I think I've mentioned on a couple threads dealing with dobro amplification. I didn't like the SuperBro on my lap steel - the sound was ok, but the lap steel just has too much sustain. I figured using the DobroLace and SuperBro combo would give the tone and a more natural response. This is good news...I think I'm gonna try this out.
