If you have a I, II and V tuning repeated,
E G# B E G# B

you can make one note a F#

Or make one note a D for a Dom7,
then another the F#

basically find a note you can LOSE and tune it up or down.

G B D G A D
So drop it back 2 whole steps

F#9 Tuning:

F# A# E G# C# E
drop this back a whole step

This one is hip
E13 Tuning:

B D E G# C# E

David, my chord theory's not great but with the E13 tuning B D E G# C# E, wouldn't this be called E6th? Using the octave (strings) E to E. Thank you, Pete

I believe the common name for ‘this tuning’ is C#m7: B-D-E-G#-C#-E

The E9th pedal steel tuning is 10 strings. You can't put it on a 6 string instrument - it won't fit. Stick with E7th, that's my advice.

I might consider it a E6 also, but it was labled E13.
I guess be cause it was a contraction for Leon's 8 string E13

thanks to you all for your advice. i truly respect your knowledge of the steel guitar. i am truly a beginer at this instrument. one more request i have is can anyone suggest to me a good beginer video, when i say that i am a beginer i am the ultimate beginer but i will learn how to play.

Jonathan check out the link I posted to Brad's tunings sight.
TONS of tunings there.
Basicall try a bunch of them, eventually something will just slap you in the face and say
PLAY ME!

I just put that E13 / E6, by whatever name, on the Supro 6, it is hip.

It doesn't sound terribly 6ish to me, but it does have many good pockets for chords that work logically like a C6. But it also seems a very different animal, not like a C6 tuned up two steps.

Johnathan, one good suggestion is
try to find the root I, V and III note of which every tuning you use, on each string.

At that [point you can block out a
I IV IV I , VI II V I blues ( in C ; C F C G, A D G C )

You should then have a pretty good handle of what chords build with which voicings on the tuning you're using.

Jerry Byrd's instructional video is an eye opener - Scotty's Music has it. It'll make you want to get the whole course.

I agree with b0b, leave it at an E7th. My laps are tuned to E7th which is low to high: B D E G# B E. By just retuning the 1st string to D and the 3rd to G you get a nice G6th tuning for swing things. Also doing that, the 1st three strings are the same as a Dobro G tuning and you can do a lot of dobro stuff on it....JH
