I notice what looks like rust particles on my "plain" strings. It doesn't appear to affect the sound, but I can feel it with the ring and pinky fingers of my left hand.
Which brings me to the question, does anyone do anything special for general string care? I notice some players wipe their strings with a cloth after playing (is this just any old cloth, or is it treated with something)? |

Just make sure your hands are clean when you sit down to play, and wipe the strings with a dry cloth after playing. I've yet to find a string cleaner that doesn't leave some sort of nasty substances on the strings.

A Blitz cloth (which is treated with a metal cleaner) will clean much off the strings; but you must wipe the residual off with a clean cloth.
Use a clean cloth regularly and the Blitz cloth only occasionally.

Just wiping your strings with any clean cloth after playing can double the life of your strings.
I like to use those lint-free yellow shammy-type cloths that are used for polishing shoes or buffing wood finishes. Lint can get caught in the bridge and the nut. Annoying.
