I notice what looks like rust particles on my "plain" strings. It doesn't appear to affect the sound, but I can feel it with the ring and pinky fingers of my left hand.

Which brings me to the question, does anyone do anything special for general string care? I notice some players wipe their strings with a cloth after playing (is this just any old cloth, or is it treated with something)?

Just make sure your hands are clean when you sit down to play, and wipe the strings with a dry cloth after playing. I've yet to find a string cleaner that doesn't leave some sort of nasty substances on the strings.

A Blitz cloth (which is treated with a metal cleaner) will clean much off the strings; but you must wipe the residual off with a clean cloth.

Use a clean cloth regularly and the Blitz cloth only occasionally.

Paul Franklin, of Franklin Steel Guitars has them.

Just wiping your strings with any clean cloth after playing can double the life of your strings.

I like to use those lint-free yellow shammy-type cloths that are used for polishing shoes or buffing wood finishes. Lint can get caught in the bridge and the nut. Annoying.
