I was buying some new separate strings today and when I got to the .024 for the G#, it's only made wound. Would that be what I use on an E tuning, or should I go to a .022 solid? Not sure what's on there now but it isn't wound.
Thanks, Ron

I use a .024 wound for my 'G#' (and F# on my long scale, in open-D).
When they're this fat they have to be wound IMHO, because of sustain and intonation issues.
I believe the GHS 'open-E' set has a plain .024 for the third string, and it's terrible, intonation is off and so is the sustain once you get up around 10th fret or further up the neck....

Ron; here is a link to a wonderful learning experience about string gauging for all the notes you can possibly tune to for what ever scale length your steel is close to.

It's from my friend John Ely's website and after you learn this; you will then know what is what.
